Donaustauf combines architectural history with trails along the Danube and a regional market. Cultural destinations include Walhalla, Donaustauf Castle Ruins and churches with very different architectural histories. To decide whether the town fits your travel plans, it is worth considering its various highlights: architecture, hiking, cycling and regional food.

Churches and Architectural History

St. Salvator in Donaustauf was built around 1430 in the Gothic style, extended in the 17th century and given a Baroque makeover in the 18th century. Later, Leo von Klenze redesigned the church in the Romanesque Revival style on behalf of King Ludwig I, so that it would visually match nearby Walhalla. The church also contains frescoes from the early 15th century, which are among its artistic and historical highlights.

St. Martin in Sulzbach, a district of the Donaustauf market town, is a listed former early Gothic fortified church. Arrow slits are visible on the west side, showing its former defensive character. The two churches have different features: in Sulzbach, the early Gothic design and visible defensive elements shape the view, while at St. Salvator, the focus is on its succession of building phases and its frescoes.

St. Salvator is scheduled to be open for visits and silent prayer on the first Sunday of each month from May to October, between 2:00 and 5:00 p.m. Check these hours again before your visit.

Hiking and Cycling

Numerous hiking trails, including the Danube Panorama Trail and the Castle Trails, start right in Donaustauf. The Donaustauf Castle Trail starts at the foot of Donaustauf Castle Ruins. This route therefore has a clearly specified starting point, while other trails begin directly in the town.

Relaxed cycling along the Danube is a recreational activity for the whole family in Donaustauf. The Danube Cycle Path runs along the northern bank of the Danube via Schwabelweis, a district of Regensburg, and Tegernheim to Donaustauf. Check current route conditions before setting out on a specific ride.
