Kallmünz: art, history and river routes
Kallmünz combines a preserved castle ruin, contemporary public art, and walking and canoe routes. If you are looking for a hotel in Kallmünz, consider whether the town’s history, sculptures, a themed walk or a canoe route should be the focus of your stay.
Sculpture trail and Schlossberg
The Kallmünz Sculpture Trail brings together a diverse collection of contemporary sculptures that have been permanently installed in public spaces in Kallmünz over the past few decades. The recommended circular route starts at the old Netto car park at Dinauer Straße 6, passes through the Inner Market, climbs about 150 metres in elevation to Schlossberg, and continues to the Outer Market. Some works can only be reached with limited accessibility, especially on Schlossberg. If this is important for your plans, take this limitation into account before your visit.
Castle ruins and local history
Settlement on Kallmünz’s Schlossberg dates back to prehistoric times; the first fortification was built in the 10th century. The preserved castle ruin includes a round keep with two stepped sections and an elevated entrance, a chapel built onto the north side of the palas, and a palas preserved to a height of two storeys, overlooking the market. The main castle stood at the far end of the promontory, directly above the steep drop to the Naab and Vils rivers.
Several paths lead from Kallmünz to the castle ruin. In the wider Regensburg destination area, Kallmünz Castle Ruin has been connected since 2007 to 44 other nearby castles and castle ruins as part of the Regensburg Castle Trails. The network comprises five hiking routes with a total length of 200 kilometres.
A walk with a fruit theme
The Kallmünz section of the Hemau–Beratzhausen–Kallmünz Fruit Experience Trail is a walking route about 2.5 kilometres long. Its theme is “Fruit wood as a material – what artists, designers and weather forecasters look for in fruit trees.” It focuses on the uses of fruit wood and different perspectives on fruit trees. The walking trails have different themes: the Sculpture Trail focuses on contemporary public art, while the Fruit Experience Trail explores fruit trees and their uses.
Canoeing on the Naab and Vils
On the Naab, canoe route stage 5 runs from Kallmünz to Mariaort. The designated launch and landing points for this stage are the Kallmünz weir and the Naab bridge south of Kallmünz, accessed via Gessendorfer Straße. At the weir at kilometre 22.1, canoeists can portage below the weir. Parking is available where the Vils flows into the Naab.
The Vils is also navigable by canoe from Hahnbach to Kallmünz. The approximately 55-kilometre route can be divided into about six stages. Its final stage runs from Dietldorf to Kallmünz, where the Vils flows into the Naab. Kallmünz is the starting point for Naab stage 5 and the endpoint for the final Vils stage. This distinction helps you understand the river routes described here.
