Cultural history in Mitterfels
Since December 1982, the Mitterfels Castle Museum has been housed in the former prison wing of the old district court and later local court, a building around 200 years old. In the cells of the former prison, it showcases the workshops of a village blacksmith, wheelwright, shoemaker and goldsmith, as well as farming life and work. The museum thus brings together the historic court and prison building with displays of crafts and rural everyday life.
The Hien-Sölde offers a different architectural perspective: this late medieval timber-block building stands on a quarry-stone base, and its origins date back to 1436. Here, the focus is on the construction method and date, whereas the castle museum’s historical context is shaped by its former use as a court and prison, along with its workshops and depictions of farming life.
St. George’s Church was built in 1734 in the late Baroque style. It offers another clearly defined point of reference for the town’s history, both in terms of period and architecture.
Cycling: Circular routes and the Danube–Rain Cycle Path
There are nine circular cycling routes, numbered 1 to 9. Some sections follow the Danube–Rain Cycle Path. Routes 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8 and 9 start at the Panoramabad or the old railway station. As route details may be revised, check them before setting out.
The Danube–Rain Cycle Path runs right alongside Mitterfels and follows a former railway line into the Bavarian Forest. Alongside the numbered circular routes, it offers a separate point of reference for planning your cycling trip.
Hiking and Nordic walking
Around Mitterfels and Haselbach, 14 circular hiking trails pass through forests, across meadows and along unspoilt streams. They also pass fruit trees. Three nature trails offer a different focus: visitors can discover local flora and fauna along these trails. Information boards explain ecosystems and historical background and encourage physical activity. When choosing a route, you can distinguish between circular trails offering scenic views and paths focused on nature and history.
The circular hiking trails shown on the Mitterfels hiking map at a scale of 1:25,000 are generally also suitable for Nordic walking. The Nordic walking routes start at the Panoramabad. Check the local trail status before setting out. The scale means that one centimetre on the map represents 250 metres on the ground.
