Archaeological history in the town library, the Roman tower with views of the Rottal, the bathing lake and an exercise trail each give Pocking a different focus. If you are looking for a hotel in Pocking, you can start by choosing the theme you would like to shape your stay. Local highlights range from finds and historic traces to views and exercise.

Archaeology in the town library

The permanent archaeological exhibition “Drehscheibe Pocking” opened in February 2007 and is housed in a side room of the Pocking town library measuring approximately 75 m². Its themes span three millennia: it presents traces of the Celts, Romans and Bavarians, who set foot on the Pockinger Heide during this period. The exhibition thus links different historical eras with a specific landscape.

It also displays finds from several excavations carried out after the local Roman settlement was discovered in 1951. The two dates have different meanings: 1951 marks the discovery of the Roman settlement, while February 2007 is when the permanent exhibition opened. Together, the finds and the three-millennia timeframe give visitors an archaeological focus that ranges from the Pockinger Heide to local Roman history.

Roman tower, Rottal and bathing lake

The Roman tower in Pocking is an observation tower around 20 metres high. From its platform, you can enjoy panoramic views across the Rottal and, in Föhn conditions, as far as the Alps. The views across the Rottal and the possible distant views of the Alps are distinct: the latter are explicitly dependent on Föhn conditions.

The bathing lake by the Roman tower on Füssinger Straße offers a different focus. The sunbathing lawn covers 22,000 m², while the water surface measures around 30 ha. These figures refer to different areas: the smaller figure is for the sunbathing lawn, the larger for the water surface. The bathing lake is therefore characterised by two clearly distinct area measurements, while the Roman tower is associated with its height and views.

Exercise in Schlupfing Landscape Park

The exercise trail for all generations is located by the gravel pit lake in Schlupfing Landscape Park. Its name highlights exercise and all generations; the trail itself is set beside a gravel pit lake in the landscape park. This makes it distinct from the archaeological exhibition and the Roman tower. If you are looking for specific themes in Pocking, cultural history, views and an exercise trail are all different points of interest.

The wider Passau travel destination

The wider Passau travel destination offers further cultural attractions, distinct from those in Pocking. The Bavarian Forest Museum Village in Tittling is one of Europe’s largest open-air museums. Across 20 hectares, you can visit more than 100 residential and farm buildings from the Bavarian Forest dating from 1580 to 1890. They include farmhouses, mills, sawmills, smithies, chapels and field monuments, as well as Germany’s oldest primary school, dating from 1666. While Pocking’s permanent exhibition presents finds and traces from the Pockinger Heide, historic buildings are the focus in Tittling.

The wider Passau travel destination also offers a variety of landscape and leisure experiences. The Haus am Strom nature experience centre is located in the narrow Danube valley between Bavaria and Austria, downstream from Untergriesbach. In the Passau region, the Granite Adventure Hiking Trail runs around Hauzenberg, and the Smugglers’ Trail is in the Danube Pearls. The Danube Cycle Path also runs through the Passau region and received a 4-star rating following an assessment by the German Cyclists’ Federation. As certification status may change, check the latest information when planning a specific trip.

The Passau region is shaped by rivers, forests and thermal baths. Thermal springs known far and wide are found in Bad FĂĽssing and Bad Griesbach. These regional attractions complement a visit to Pocking, but are part of the wider Passau travel destination.
