Rimbach: Castle, Hiking Trails and Church Art
Accommodation in Rimbach
Rimbach lies at the foot of the Hoher Bogen and is surrounded by meadows and forests. If you are travelling to attend a festival, plan around its dates; for hikes, the route and the nature of the trail are among the factors to consider.
Lichtenegg Castle and Festivals
The ruins of Lichtenegg Castle lie in dense mixed woodland at an altitude of 707 metres and have a circular tower that visitors can climb. So a visit is about more than the ruins’ location: visitors can also enter the tower itself.
The annual Lichtenegg Castle Festival takes place in the courtyard of the ruins. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the exact dates before making your travel plans.
Hiking Trails and Nature Around Rimbach
The circular “Path of the Senses” trail starts at the multi-generational park at the entrance to Rimbach and ends on the grounds of the former outdoor swimming pool. It follows meadow and woodland paths and passes rock walls, hedges and trees. Its start and end points, along with these changing features along the way, give the route a clearly defined setting.
The Ri1 circular trail, also known as the Hohenbogen Trail, runs from Rimbach via Hinterlichteneck to the Hohenbogen castle site. The route is 12.7 kilometres long and takes about four hours. Rimbach also has a connecting trail to the Goldsteig’s main route that is recognised by the tourism association. This means that, in addition to the circular trail with its two specified endpoints, there is a longer route with a stated distance and duration, as well as the Goldsteig connection, to help you find your way.
For mountain biking, the wider region is worth exploring: The Rimbach holiday region and the area around the Hoher Bogen have two varied routes featuring mountain crossings, fast descents and views. These routes broaden the choice beyond hiking trails without confusing them with the mountain biking routes.
Churches and Architectural History
A church in Rimbach is documented as early as 1438. The interior of St. Michael’s parish church is late Baroque, with strong Rococo features. The Chapel of Souls next to the parish church was built in 1735. These three details offer different points of interest: a historical record of a church in Rimbach, the design of St. Michael’s and the construction date of the neighbouring chapel.
The Holmeier House is also part of the area’s architectural history. It is one of the last surviving examples of the “Waldlerhaus” house type and recalls a style of construction that shaped Rimbach over the past three centuries. Visits to the house can be arranged on request through the Tourist Information Office.
Getting There and Practical Information
Depending on the season, bus routes 615 and 650 run to Rimbach from Furth im Wald or Bad Kötzting. As services vary by season, check the timetable for your travel date before setting off. In the wider region, on-demand bus route 913 also runs to the Gipfelsteig trail and the mountain station on the Hoher Bogen.
Two electric bikes can be rented from the Rimbach Tourist Information Office at HohenbogenstraĂźe 10. You can contact the office by phone on 09941/940016; check availability for your chosen date in advance.
