Roding: Chapels, Culture and Leisure
Accommodation in Roding
Roding brings together historic chapels, a fire brigade museum and a range of leisure activities at Esper. During your stay, you can discover different sides of the town: sacred architecture and frescoes, a cultural program, and activities along the Regen River. The Tourist Information Office also provides maps and information to help you find your way around.
Chapels and Historic Traces
The chapels tell different chapters of Roding’s history. The Dance of Death fresco on the cemetery wall was probably created around the middle of the 17th century, based on an older design. St. Joseph’s Chapel was originally the baptistery of Roding’s original church, dating from the 7th or 8th century. Its upper floor, added later, contains 13th- and 14th-century frescoes in the Romanesque and Gothic fresco-secco techniques.
St. Anne’s Chapel is also connected to the old cemetery wall: it is attached to the wall and replaced an earlier building around 1650. Comparing the architectural and artistic history reveals different periods—from the early baptistery and the frescoes to the replacement of the earlier building around 1650. If you are interested in Roding’s history, these three examples offer different points of connection, without suggesting that they belong to the same period or served the same function.
Museum and Cultural Program
The Roding Fire Brigade Museum displays more than 250 historic firefighting items, uniforms and documents across two floors. The collection brings together different kinds of objects: equipment, clothing and written records. Kulturhaus Fronfeste has a different focus, hosting changing exhibitions, theater, films and cabaret. Its program is not limited to a single format; for specific dates, check the events published at the time.
You can choose between the museum and the cultural program according to your interests: the Fire Brigade Museum focuses on historic objects, while Fronfeste offers several types of events and art. Together, the two venues complement the historic chapels, offering further ways to explore Roding’s culture.
Leisure at Esper and the Regen
The leisure area at Esper is located right on the Regen River and includes activities for different age groups. Each facility has its own focus. The skate park features a mini ramp, ledges and a box. The Jungle Arena consists of a climbable dome structure and a pyramid-shaped Octanet. Its structure is more than six meters high and offers views of the surrounding trees and the Regen river meadows. The Jungle Arena’s adventure course is designed for children and teenagers.
A water-experience platform right on the Regen offers an opportunity to experience nature. The disc golf course at Esper also combines sport, nature and strategy: on the course along the Regen River, metal baskets with chains serve as targets. The activities are quite distinct—from the skate park features and Jungle Arena structures to disc golf’s target game and the nature experience at the platform. These specific features can help you decide which activity you would like to explore further.
Finding Your Way Around
Roding Tourist Information provides flyers about leisure activities, hiking and cycling maps, and an up-to-date town map. If you need a specific map, ask what is available. There is also a digital information point outside the Tourist Information Office, where you can explore sights, events and other activities interactively. The town map, maps and information point offer different ways to find your bearings: you can start with an overview or browse the available information interactively.
