If you’re looking for a hotel in Eckersdorf, the municipality’s varied attractions can help you plan your trip: palace gardens and garden art sit alongside protected gorges and documented hiking trails. This lets you tailor your choices to the topics that interest you most during your stay.

Fantaisie Palace Park and Garden Art

Fantaisie Palace Park lies within the municipality of Eckersdorf and brings together design elements from the Rococo, Sentimentalist and Historicist periods. The palace and park date back to Duchess Elisabeth Friederike Sophie (1732–1780). These three styles give the park its distinctive art-historical character without confining it to a single period.

In 1991, it was decided to establish a garden art museum at Fantaisie Palace; the museum opened in mid-2000. In the wider Bayreuth destination area, the Garden Art Museum at Fantaisie Palace opened in July 2000 as Germany’s first museum at the time devoted exclusively to the history of garden art. One of the palace’s notable works of art is the Spindler Cabinet: an inlaid artwork by the brothers Johann Friedrich and Heinrich Wilhelm Spindler.

The water cascade is also part of the park’s history. It was fully restored as a water feature between 2003 and 2005. These dates describe the restoration at the time; they do not indicate current operating hours.

Gorges and Natural Monuments

The Sandstone Gorge is protected as a natural monument. The gorge forest of the Devil’s Hole is also protected and has been classified as a natural monument since 1941. If you walk upstream through the Devil’s Hole from below, you’ll reach a waterfall at the end of the gorge after about 100 metres. The approximate distance and the upstream direction help you identify this section of the gorge.

The Devil’s Hole was already a popular excursion destination in the 19th century because of its wild, romantic gorges. According to entries in Cosima’s diary, Richard Wagner visited the area frequently and stopped at the forest hut. The site thus links the landscape’s history with a documented connection to cultural history.

Hiking Trails and Their Duration

The Princess Friederike Trail starts at the historic Kappellenweiher pond. Its small island was once used by the nobility for coffee parties. The trail passes the Franzosenbruck bridge and a small lake, then climbs over old sandstone steps and rock formations to the Siegesturm. The tower was built in 1871 after the Franco-Prussian War.

The “Over the Hohe Buche” Cuckoo Trail is about eight kilometres long and takes approximately two hours. It runs from Busbach via Steinberg and Melkendorf, along the woodland area known as “Die Hohe Buche,” crosses the Eschenbach towards Lochau, and then returns to Busbach. The blue-marked “Through the Beautiful Busbach Valley to Braunstein” route offers another reference for planning your hikes: it is about 6.5 kilometres long and takes approximately one hour and 45 minutes. Comparing the two stated routes, “Over the Hohe Buche” is about 1.5 kilometres longer; their stated durations differ by around 15 minutes.

Cuckoo Trail 2 runs through the Busbach Valley via Pfarrhügel to the Braunstein Monument. It returns to the starting point via Steinberg, with panoramic views over Busbach. The Devil’s Hole hiking trail leads from the forest hut through the Devil’s Hole and back to the hut; optional detours include Wolfsfalle, Lettenwinkel or the Wills Monument. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
