Gefrees: Hiking Trails and History
Accommodation in Gefrees
Gefrees combines hiking and cycling trails with historic sites. A 2.1-kilometer walking and cycling path was built between Gefrees and Knopfhammer as another section connecting the town to the Eger Cycle Route and the district of Wunsiedel. The road construction authority reported the construction in July 2025.
Hiking trails with specific starting points
The Westweg is one of the Fichtelgebirge Club’s five main hiking trails and forms the backbone of the day hike into the Ölschnitz Valley. The starting point for this day hike is a rest area for hikers and tennis players on the grounds of Gefrees Tennis Club.
Circular Hiking Trail 1 Gefrees runs east from the HĂĽgelwiese hiking car park near the St 2180 to Vorderer Kapf. It continues via Knopfhammer, Leitenholz, and Galgenberg, then returns to the starting point via the Kornbach crossing and the St 2180. Benches invite you to take a break along the blue-and-white-marked hiking trail between Gefrees and Hohe Heide.
Castle ruins and nearby spa town
The ruins of Grünstein Castle are located above Grünstein, a district of Gefrees. Around 900 years ago, a motte on the rocky ridge offered residents protection from marauders. Bad Weißenstadt, Bavaria’s 22nd spa town, is just a few kilometers from Gefrees. The ruins and the nearby spa town appeal to different excursion interests: history on the one hand, and a place designated as a spa town on the other.
