Bavarian Swabia: World Heritage, the Ries and Cycling Routes
Accommodation in Bavarian Swabia
The Augsburg Water Management System is part of the UNESCO World Heritage in Bavarian Swabia. It comprises a functionally connected group of 22 interdependent elements—a World Heritage property whose significance as a complete system goes beyond that of individual sights. The region also offers historic places, a striking crater landscape, and routes for cycling and hiking. This means you can explore Bavarian Swabia in different ways, depending on your travel interests.
Experience World Heritage and culture
The Fuggerei in Augsburg also connects a specific place with a long history: Jakob Fugger founded the social housing complex in 1521, and it is considered the oldest of its kind in the world. The Augsburg Puppet Theatre offers a different kind of cultural experience. It has presented marionette performances for decades, and the puppet theatre museum “Die Kiste” is located on the floor above.
Official guided tours of Harburg Castle offer an insight into 900 years of history. The tour includes the castle church, the battlements, prison towers and the courtroom. If you are interested in Baroque church interiors, you will find the former Holzen Benedictine convent in the northern part of Augsburg–Western Forests Nature Park. The convent church features splendid Baroque furnishings.
The Ries landscape and hiking routes
The Nördlingen Ries lies in the north of Bavarian Swabia: a 25-kilometre-wide crater formed by a meteorite impact around 15 million years ago. The Ries Panorama Trail, a seven-day hiking route, circles the meteorite crater in the UNESCO Global Geopark Ries. When planning, check the latest stage details, as they may change with trail management updates.
Another natural area is Augsburg–Western Forests Nature Park. Covering 1,225 km², it is the only nature park in Bavarian Swabia. One hiking option in the region, the DonAUwald Hiking Trail, stretches for just under 60 kilometres between Günzburg and Schwenningen and is connected to the region’s rail services. It is the first hiking trail in Bavarian Swabia to be classified as a premium hiking trail.
The route lengths also offer a practical guide when choosing a trip: the 7 Chapels Circular Route links seven chapels over approximately 153 kilometres. In Bavarian Swabia, the Romantic Road connects seven towns between the Ries and the Wittelsbach Land. Both routes offer a different framework for planning a trip than a single hiking trail.
Cycling between river valleys and towns
The DonauTäler Cycle Route covers 14 tributary valleys of the Danube over approximately 300 kilometres. The Danube Cycle Path runs for 100 kilometres between Neu-Ulm and Donauwörth through the Swabian Danube Valley. The two routes therefore differ both in their stated lengths and in their described itineraries. Bavarian Swabia also offers connected riverside cycle routes, ranging from easy loops for families and leisure cyclists to more challenging options.
The Via Claudia Augusta, the DonauTäler Cycle Route and the Danube Cycle Path are each classified as four-star ADFC quality cycle routes. This is useful additional information if you are comparing different cycling routes alongside their respective distance details. Before planning a specific itinerary, check the approximate length of the DonauTäler Cycle Route again.
Regional specialities
Rieser Bauerntorte is a speciality from the Nördlingen Ries. This yeast cake with an apple filling, covered with pastry, has a tradition dating back to the 16th century. Swabian Maultaschen are another speciality of Bavarian Swabia. Typically, these filled pasta parcels contain a meat or vegetable filling, with a distinctive proportion of spinach. Both dishes offer a culinary reason to discover the region’s local differences.
Getting your bearings and choosing a hotel location
The Bavarian Swabia tourism region covers the districts of Aichach-Friedberg, Augsburg, Dillingen, Donau-Ries, Günzburg and Neu-Ulm, as well as the independent city of Augsburg. This wide geographical area makes it helpful to choose a focus when planning your trip, such as Augsburg’s World Heritage, the Nördlingen Ries, or cycling and hiking tours. Then choose your hotel location to suit your specific plans.
Bavarian Swabia is located at the A7/A8 motorway interchange and can be reached by car or train. The Bayern-Takt offers hourly train services every day, from morning until late at night, including Saturdays and Sundays. Check the current timetable before travelling. You can also explore the region using the Lauschtour audio guide app, which offers 23 free audio tours that can be enjoyed flexibly without booking in advance.
