Roggenburg combines monastery culture with paths and nature-themed attractions. The monastery church and museum provide a cultural focus; a short themed circular trail runs by Roggenburger Weiher, while boating is possible along the pond path at Klosterweiher. There is also a longer hiking route through the municipality, a section of the Donautäler long-distance cycle route, an ivy maze and a recurring cultural programme. You can tailor your stay to whether you are mainly interested in architecture, themed trails, gardens or events.

Monastery culture: church and museum

Roggenburg Monastery Church was built between 1752 and 1758. Today, as a parish church, it is one of the most important Rococo buildings in Swabia. Roggenburg Monastery Museum presents Swabian monastic culture, with Baroque art treasures at the heart of its permanent exhibition. The church and museum offer two different cultural perspectives: the Rococo architecture of the parish church today and the monastic culture showcased in the exhibition.

Tours of Roggenburg Monastery Museum are available by arrangement, including a church tour on request. If you would like to combine both perspectives in one visit, arrange the tour in advance.

Walking and cycling routes

The Roggenburg Soil Discovery Trail is an approximately 1 km circular route by Roggenburger Weiher. At its eight stations, information panels and soil profiles are combined with interactive elements, including a soil puzzle and a soil treasure chest. The combination of a circular route, demonstrations and hands-on stations gives the trail a clear focus on soil. At about 1 km, it is a short loop; its distinctive features are its stations and theme.

At approximately 6.5 km, the Weiherweg is longer. It runs through the municipality of Roggenburg and starts at car park P 3, south of the education centre. You can choose between a short themed loop by the pond and a longer hiking trail through the municipality. The distance and starting point help you gauge the length of the hike.

The Streuobst-Runde also runs through the municipality of Roggenburg, passing traditional orchard meadows. The fruit variety conservation garden is in Biberach, a district of the municipality of Roggenburg. The stations on the Streuobst-Runde include Holzschwang, Tiefenbach, Neuhausen, Reutti, Finningen, Gerlenhofen, Senden and Wullenstetten. The route therefore also takes in the other places mentioned.

For cyclists, the four-star-rated Donautäler long-distance cycle route passes through Roggenburg on the “Klostergarten-Runde” section. The cycle route and hiking trails thus complement each other as different ways to explore the area.

Pond, garden and cultural programme

Boating is possible along the pond path at Klosterweiher. As conditions can vary, check in advance whether boating is possible on your travel dates.

The meditation garden at Roggenburg Monastery features an ivy maze with 300 varieties of ivy. The garden complements the church and route themes with a distinct perspective on plant diversity and design.

The “Roggenburger Sommer” cultural programme includes church concerts, family concerts and open-air events in the monastery courtyard. Internationally renowned organists regularly perform on the “Große Roggenburgerin”. Individual events and schedules may change; if a particular concert is important to your trip, check the dates in advance.
