When looking for a hotel in Stadtbergen, it is worth first considering the themes that you want to shape your stay. The city offers opportunities to explore church and art history, contemporary art and a range of leisure interests. Connections by tram and bus are also practical points to consider. This lets you plan around the places and activities that matter to you.

Churches and architectural history in Stadtbergen

On the Kirchberg in Leitershofen, the Baroque St. Oswald Church, richly appointed, stands slightly above the original village centre. The FĂĽssen master builder Johann Georg Fischer designed the building, which was constructed in 1732. In 1928, the church was extended by one bay; an extensive restoration followed from 1979 to 1983. St. Oswald has no longer been a parish church since 1970. The rosary is regularly prayed there, and an evening Mass is celebrated.

Situated on a hill, the parish church of St. Nicholas is a focal point and landmark of the city, and also features in the city coat of arms. It was built in 1730/31 on the site of a late-Gothic predecessor church. Inside, a single-nave nave connects to a recessed choir; ceiling paintings by the artists BergmĂĽller and Albrecht define the interior. At St. Oswald, the focus is on architectural history and restoration, while St. Nicholas also offers the chance to view the predecessor building, the layout of the interior and the ceiling paintings.

Collections and contemporary art

Since 2006, the Dr. Georg Frank Altenhilfe Foundation in Stadtbergen has housed the Hilda Sandtner Foundation’s permanent exhibition “Art Behind Glass.” It comprises 63 international exhibits of reverse glass painting spanning four centuries, from the 17th to the 20th century. BlechRoller – The Museum in Leitershofen displays metal scooters from five decades, twelve nations and 25 manufacturers. The collection also includes literature, contemporary accounts, documents and collectors’ items from scooter clubs around the world. Visits are possible by appointment.

The Kunstraum Am Pfarrhof Leitershofen is dedicated to contemporary art. It exhibits painting, drawing, sculpture, installation and photography. The sculpture park on August-Abenstein-Weg offers a different approach to sculpture: every three years, the finalists in the Bavaria-wide Stadtbergen Sculpture Art Prize are presented there. The different venues therefore offer distinct highlights—from a permanent exhibition covering a historical period, to changing art forms and a recurring sculpture programme.

Leisure and getting around locally

Large parts of Stadtbergen are served by tram lines 2 and 6, as well as various bus routes operated by the Augsburg Transport Company. For specific journeys, it is advisable to check the latest route information, as public transport networks can change. The information about broad coverage provides a guide for planning your trip, but does not replace checking the connection for your particular destination.

More to explore in the Augsburg destination

The Augsburg destination offers further opportunities to enjoy nature and outdoor activities. The LandArt Bonstetten Art Trail is a 5.65-kilometre circular walking route, where the artist Hama Lohrmann personally explains his sculptures. The Augsburg district also has a well-developed cycling network. Another walking route is the three-kilometre meditation trail from the Cistercian Abbey of Oberschönenfeld to Weiherhof on the edge of the Schwarzachtal valley. The two routes differ in length and layout: the Bonstetten trail is described as a circular route, while the meditation trail runs between the stated starting and ending points.

The Stauden, Holzwinkel and Reischenau regions are part of the Augsburg — Western Forests Nature Park. Westwood Alpacas offers regular alpaca hikes and excursions through the nature park. These add distinct regional attractions to the churches, art venues and leisure facilities in Stadtbergen within the Augsburg destination.
