Freudenberg
Accommodation in Freudenberg
When staying in Freudenberg, it is worth looking at the different occasions associated with Johannisberg: the Johannisberg Festival has a long tradition, pilgrimage groups set off around the time of the festival, and services on the hill take place only in summer. The dates and occasions differ—use this practical guide to help plan your trip.
Johannisberg: Festival, Pilgrimage Groups and Services
The Johannisberg Festival takes place on 24 June, the feast day of St John the Baptist. The festival includes a solemn open-air service on Johannisberg. On the Sunday closest to the festival, pilgrimage groups from the region set off on foot for Johannisberg Church. These are different occasions associated with Johannisberg; for the pilgrimage groups, the key date is the Sunday close to the festival.
Services on Johannisberg take place only during the summer months. If you are planning a visit for a service, check the current parish newsletter for dates. This helps distinguish the seasonal services from the information about the Johannisberg Festival and pilgrimage.
A Special Feature Near Etsdorf
In the associated municipality, the Asphalt Chapel has stood at the edge of the forest near Etsdorf in the Amberg-Sulzbach district since June 2002. It is made entirely of cast asphalt. This unusual material adds a distinctive touch alongside the religious traditions on Johannisberg.
Regional Perspectives in the Wider Amberg-Sulzbach Destination
The Amberg-Sulzbacher Land lies in Bavaria between Regensburg and Nuremberg. Its landscape for hiking features imposing limestone cliffs, gentle Jura hills, extensive forests and river valleys. The Felsenweg trail is a 2.7-kilometre hike from Sackdilling through the rock labyrinth to the Bauernlöcher caves and into a striking rocky landscape; the walking time is about 45 minutes. The Wacholderwanderweg is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land. The Felsenweg details include its length and approximate walking time, while the Wacholderwanderweg is highlighted for its regional standing.
There are also different options for other activities. At the Bow Vision 3D course near Wolfertsfeld in Birgland, you can try traditional archery on a circular route of about three kilometres through the kind of farm woodland typical of the Upper Palatinate Jura. The Vils is navigable by canoe from Hahnbach; the route passes unmodified stretches of river, castles and historic Amberg.
The Theuern nature observation platform was built at the edge of the polishing ponds at the Theuern sewage treatment plant. The adjacent wetland includes the Vils, oxbow lakes and ponds, and serves year-round as a resting and breeding place for local birds and those migrating from the north. There is also an important seasonal restriction when planning hikes to regional caves: entering the caves is prohibited from 1 October to 31 March.
Culture, History and Food in the Region
At Kultur-Schloss Theuern, the East Bavarian Mining and Industry Museum researches and documents mining and industry in eastern Bavaria, keeping their history alive. The Erzweg connects sites with a mining tradition spanning more than 1,000 years and passes through cultural and natural landscapes. Another regional tradition is the Kirwan: since 2023, they have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. Celebrated each year in the respective village, they are open to visitors and locals alike.
Traditional Schlachtschüssel is part of the regional cuisine. Many inns in the Amberg-Sulzbacher Land serve it regularly, with Wurschtsuppn, boiled pork and blood sausages, liver sausages and bratwursts made according to their own recipes. Dates vary from one inn to another. Brewing also has regional roots: original Upper Palatinate Zoigl is brewed in Erlheim. The Sudhang private brewery in Amberg uses hops from Illschwang, the world’s smallest hop-growing area.
