Kastl brings together historic sites, trails through the countryside, and themes related to art and nature. The Historic Circular Trail introduces visitors to the stories of selected houses, while the Art Hiking Station and the Nature Experience Station each focus on their own themes.

Historic Trails and Buildings

The Historic Circular Trail uses 33 information boards to introduce the history of selected houses and their respective objects. For a longer loop, there is a yellow-marked route with an additional 18 boards. The extension leads to Monastery Castle, through an outlying area of Kastl, and on to Pfaffenhofen and Pattershofen. The extended route takes about two and a half hours in total.

Between Kastl and Ursensollen, the Schweppermann Cycle Route crosses an 18-meter-high viaduct with a view. The sights mentioned in connection with the cycle route include Monastery Castle with its Romanesque basilica. The castle complex on Klosterberg is also a sight in Markt Kastl. Check current route conditions before setting out.

Art and Landscape

The Art Hiking Station in Kastl is next to the former railway station. The artwork there tells one aspect of the history of Monastery Castle. The “Climbing Eagle Owl” Nature Experience Station explores a different theme: the coexistence of climbers and cliff-dwelling animals.

The Lauterach Valley near Kastl runs from east to west; its southern slopes enjoy plenty of sunshine. The Juniper Hiking Trail passes through fragrant juniper hills, where thyme, Carthusian pinks, gentians, and orchids bloom. The flowers vary with the season, so the botanical impression changes depending on when you visit. The juniper hills were created through grazing by cattle and sheep. Landscape conservation and the history of the cultural landscape in the Lauterach Valley are also themes associated with Kastl.

Seasonal Leisure Activities

The heated outdoor swimming pool in Kastl offers relaxation, exercise, and swimming fun. As it is a seasonal facility, check current opening information before your visit. Fishing on the Lauterach is another seasonal leisure activity in Kastl. Check local information about conditions and permits in advance before making plans.

In the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination

The Amberg-Sulzbach region lies in Bavaria between Regensburg and Nuremberg. For hiking, the region offers impressive limestone cliffs, gentle Jurassic hills, extensive forests, and charming river valleys. The Felsenweg near Sackdilling is a specific route: the 2.7-kilometer hike passes through the rock maze to the Bauernlöcher and an impressive rocky landscape; the walking time is about 45 minutes.

Nature watching is also part of the wider Amberg-Sulzbach destination. The Theuern platform was built at the edge of the settling ponds at the wastewater treatment plant in Theuern. The adjacent wetland, with the Vils River, former river channels, and ponds, is a year-round resting and breeding site for local birds and those migrating from the north.

Since 2023, the Kirwan festivals in the Amberg-Sulzbach region have been part of Bavaria’s intangible cultural heritage. They are celebrated every year in their respective towns and are open to visitors and local residents.
