Lengenfeld: Hiking and Heritage in the Schwarzen Laaber Valley
Accommodation in Lengenfeld
Lengenfeld is a rural settlement in the Schwarzen Laaber Valley, at the foot of Helfenberg. The local heritage sites, the annual St. Martin’s procession and the Velburg Beer Experience Trail provide clear points of reference when planning a stay. The circular trail starts and ends in Lengenfeld. The village is directly accessible from the Nuremberg–Regensburg motorway via the Velburg–Lengenfeld exit. You can get to know Lengenfeld through its landscape, local history or a specific hike.
Hiking and practical information
The Velburg Beer Experience Trail is a 12-kilometer circular trail that starts and ends in Lengenfeld. Allow about 3.5 hours for the hike; the route includes 200 meters of elevation gain and nine stations on the history of beer. It is rated easy. The distance, walking time and elevation gain help you assess the time and physical effort involved; the stations provide the thematic focus.
The entire trail is suitable for strollers and can also be used by bicycle. Parking is available at Winkler Bräu. Since route details and practical information may change, check them locally before setting out.
Heritage and the St. Martin’s tradition
Lengenfeld’s heritage sites include the Asam Church of St. Martin, the ruins of Helfenberg Castle and the Sand Cellar, as well as four chapels: Martin Chapel, Nepomuk Chapel, Lüß Chapel and the Chapel by the motorway. The selection thus encompasses churches and chapels as well as castle ruins and the Sand Cellar.
Martin Chapel is also the setting for a local tradition: during the St. Martin’s parish church dedication festival, riders gather at the chapel for a service. After the blessing, they ride through the village. The procession takes place annually, but the exact festival date may vary. If you would like to plan your trip around this event, check the date in advance.
Velburg as a wider travel destination
The wider destination of Velburg offers further points of interest for nature and culture enthusiasts. The nearly five-kilometer Wald Experience Trail is located on Velburg Castle Hill and features 20 stations about forests and time. To find the ruins of Velburg Castle, take BurgstraĂźe from Velburg to the foot of Castle Hill; from the parking lot, a short walking path leads to the ruins. As parking arrangements may change, check them before your visit.
Velburg’s buildings also offer a variety of historical points of reference. The imposing town hall is 22 meters high and has an richly articulated, crenellated façade in the neo-Gothic style. It was built between 1863 and 1865 to replace the dilapidated former town hall. The North Gate is now the only surviving and still visible town gate in Velburg. The parish church of St. John the Baptist was probably built in the 15th century in the late Gothic style. The town hall, town gate and church therefore differ both in their architectural form and in their dates.
