If you are looking for a hotel in Sulzbach-Rosenberg, it is worth first considering which aspects of the town you would like to discover during your stay. The town’s history can be seen in its castle, museums and surviving sections of the defensive wall; literature, pharmacy and mining each offer their own focus. There are also signposted town trails and routes connected with mining. This gives you the opportunity to plan your stay around specific themes and choose between cultural attractions and outdoor activities.

Culture and history in Sulzbach-Rosenberg

From the 8th to the 12th century, Sulzbach Castle was an important seat of power in the Nordgau region and is among the earliest medieval complexes in Bavaria. The fortifications of the Sulzbach district also tell the story of several building phases: the first town wall was built around 1300 with four gates. A defensive wall constructed about 100 years later still survives in many places. Since 2013, the former synagogue has been used as a municipal place of remembrance and encounter.

The town museum brings together local and regional history with the history of mining and the ironworks of Maxhütte. Its other subjects include the Principality and town of Sulzbach, as well as the Sulzbach Simultaneum. A reconstructed mine tunnel illustrates the working conditions in mining and ironworking at the time; numerous exhibits are also on display. The museum also documents that Sulzbach was once one of Europe’s largest printing centres for Hebraica.

Another historical focus can be found at the Alte Hofapotheke Museum, which offers a glimpse into half a millennium of local pharmacy history. Everyday objects, both intact and damaged, from earlier generations are displayed alongside archaeological viewing windows and historic building fabric. These objects and structural traces give the subject of pharmacy a tangible connection to everyday life in times past.

The Sulzbach-Rosenberg Literary Archive preserves the original typescript of Günter Grass’s novel “The Tin Drum.” Its permanent exhibition offers an insight into German-language literature after 1945, with particular emphasis on the literary scene of the 1950s and 1960s. Letters, proofs, photographs, video recordings and first editions are on display in eight exhibition rooms across two floors.

Themed trails and special attractions

The YSTORION Dragon Trail combines history with a walk through the renovated town moat, which also serves as a kind of open-air museum, with historic buildings as exhibits. At six stations, you can access short audio plays using QR codes. Their themes cover the political, cultural, economic and social history of Sulzbach-Rosenberg.

Town walking trails Nos. 1 to 5 all start at Luitpoldplatz in the town centre and are marked with black numbers on a yellow background. The Sulzbach Mining Trail also has routes with different focuses: the northern route leads, among other places, to the Karoline ore mine and the GroĂźenfalz powder magazine. Along the southern route are the castle hill, the MaxhĂĽtte viewpoint and Villa Max with its mining tunnel. The Max show mine at Villa Max can only be visited as part of a guided tour arranged in advance.

In front of the school museum is a school and teaching garden with more than 80 labelled native plants, shrubs and trees. This botanical stop adds to the town’s attractions without overshadowing the historical connections of the surrounding museums and trails.

Nature and practical information

The “Wüstung Großenfalz” nature reserve is located on the site of the former village of Großenfalz in Sulzbach-Rosenberg. It is a species-rich biotope with rare animals in an undisturbed habitat. It adds a nature-focused stop to the town’s historical attractions.

Sulzbach-Rosenberg railway station is a starting point for hikes and is particularly useful for passengers travelling with the Nuremberg Transport Association (VGN).
