Two distinct themes are central to a trip to Thal: the St. Vitus Filial Church in the village and nature and hiking destinations in the surrounding area. The architectural history of St. Vitus provides a direct cultural connection to Thal, while the trails and bird sanctuary belong to a broader regional setting.

The St. Vitus Filial Church

The Romanesque walls of the nave are believed to be the oldest surviving parts of the Filial Church. In the second half of the 15th century, the nave was raised in the late Gothic style. The Romanesque masonry and the later raising therefore point to different phases of construction.

The furnishings also offer specific clues to the building’s history: three historic bells hang in the tower, two dating from 1600 and one from 1674. A ceiling painting in the nave depicts the Four Evangelists. The church is dedicated to Saint Vitus, also known as Veit. Thal has had parish rights since the 9th century; 826 or 896 are given as possible dates. The religious history of the village therefore reaches further back in time than the late Gothic raising of the nave.

Nature and Trails in the Surrounding Area

In the area around Thal, the Middle Isar Reservoirs Bird Sanctuary is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. The area is internationally important as a resting and migratory stopover site, and nationally important as a breeding area. Thus, alongside Thal’s architectural history, a regional natural area of particular importance to birds also takes center stage.

The Landshut Heights Hiking Trail is a hiking route featuring carefully researched information boards. They cover archaeological monuments, churches, castles and secular buildings, bringing together different aspects of regional cultural history. In the area around Thal, the Landshut Heights Hiking Trail’s E3 loop runs from Eching to Weixerau and includes a nature trail. If you plan to hike the E3, check trail conditions before setting out.

Eching in the Wider Travel Destination

The wider travel destination of Eching is home to the parish church of St. John the Baptist. It is a barrel-vaulted hall church with numerous windows and features an elaborate altar made of stucco marble. The church is visible from afar, situated beside the Isar, which is dammed to form a lake, and on the edge of a valuable bird sanctuary. These features describe the church in Eching.

The Middle Isar Reservoirs Bird Sanctuary can also be described more precisely in relation to Eching: its main habitats include the Middle Isar Canal and the reservoirs near Moosburg and Eching, as well as the Isar and adjacent riparian woodland. The protected area covers 5.7 square kilometers and is located roughly equally within the districts of Freising and Landshut.

For opportunities to observe wildlife, the observation tower and the southern embankment path at the Eching Reservoir are also recommended in Eching. Both offer interesting wildlife viewing opportunities throughout the year. They complement the perspective of the protected area with specific wildlife-watching locations associated with the wider travel destination of Eching.
