Ahorn combines castle history and museum offerings with hiking trails in a rolling hilly landscape. Wide-ranging views define the scenery. When planning your trip, you can treat culture and hiking as separate focuses: Ahorn offers a Renaissance building, memorials, a museum and a network of hiking trails, each with its own themes.

Castle History and Memorial Sites

Joachim von Rosenau had Ahorn Castle built in the Renaissance style in 1555, after the Peasants’ War. It was built on the remains of an older castle. The site therefore brings together the history of the former castle and the architecture of the later palace. Carls-Ruhe is a memorial to Baron Carl Hartmann von Erffa, who died in a car accident near Dietersdorf in 1911.

The Stone Table is also a memorial: it was presumably erected between 1820 and 1823, during the construction of today’s Alte Straße from Ahorn to Coburg. Another landmark is the Alte Schäferei waymarker. It was created in 2017 just beyond the Gerätemuseum des Coburger Landes “Alte Schäferei” and serves as a sign of the bond with Ahorn’s partner communities of Eisfeld and Irnding-Donnersbachtal. The historic Hohenstein landscape garden was designed as a late Romantic park. Together, these places showcase different cultural highlights—from architectural history and remembrance to park design.

Museum and Programs

The Gerätemuseum des Coburger Landes is located on the grounds and in the buildings of the former estate sheep farm of Ahorn Castle. By prior arrangement, the museum offers educational activity programs for school classes and visitor groups. It also offers guided tours, holiday programs and children’s birthday parties, as well as activities for day trips, family celebrations and club events. If you want your stay to focus on culture, you’ll find not only architectural and local history here, but also a range of museum education activities; prior arrangement is part of the planning for the group programs mentioned.

Hilly Landscape and Hiking Trails

Ahorn is set in a rolling hilly landscape with wide-ranging views. The municipality’s hiking trail network opened in autumn 2013 and comprises more than 40 kilometres of newly designated hiking trails, including three circular routes. This figure describes the overall size of the network; the three circular routes are a separately identified part of it. Hiking is therefore a clear second focus alongside the cultural themes. You can take the landscape and trail network into account together when planning your trip, while the historical sites and museum offer a different focus.

Culture in the Broader Destination of Coburg

In the broader destination of Coburg, the Museum of German Toy Industry in Neustadt bei Coburg presents the history of the German toy industry, from home-based work to factory production. Its international collection of traditional costume dolls comprises around 800 exhibits from more than 100 countries. The museum also offers hands-on activities and a museum trail. This independent museum in Neustadt bei Coburg complements the themes that Ahorn brings together: castle history, memorial sites, a museum and hiking trails.
