If you are considering Laugna as a place to stay, the Bocksberg Castle ruins, church history and the “Hügelland aktiv” cycling tour offer different points of interest. Not all the places mentioned are in the main village: the castle and several churches are in districts of the municipality of Laugna. For your planning, it is worth considering historic sights, access to the ruins and the cycling route as separate topics.

Bocksberg Castle Ruins: History and Access

The Bocksberg Castle ruins are in the district of Bocksberg. The high- to late-medieval castle complex has preserved ditches, earthworks and a remnant of the keep. The hilltop castle probably originated in the early 13th century as the seat of the Lords of Bocksberg, who lived there from 1231 to 1322. Over the following centuries, the complex changed hands several times and was purchased by the Augsburg Fugger family in 1613. During the Thirty Years’ War, the castle was so badly damaged that it was not rebuilt.

One distinction is important for putting the dates into context: the castle’s origins in the early 13th century are recorded as probable, while the Fugger family’s purchase is dated to 1613. The ruins can only be reached on foot, via Burgweg or a field path near Bergstraße 15. Check access information on site, as it may change.

Churches in Laugna and Its Districts

The Baroque Church of St. Elizabeth stands in the main village of Laugna. It is the current church of the former Church of St. John, whose patronal feast was still celebrated in 1433. St. Elizabeth was consecrated in 1720, when it was still unfinished. The information about the patronage and consecration therefore relates to different periods in the church’s history.

Construction of the new Church of St. Michael began in 1768 in the district of Osterbuch; Auxiliary Bishop Franz Xaver Adelmann von Adelmannsfelden consecrated the church in 1769. The parish of St. Michael had already been founded around 1289. In the district of Bocksberg, the Church of St. Leonard was renovated in 2003. Its altar table holds two reliquaries dating from the Rococo period, from around 1780. These examples illustrate different historical reference points: the founding of a parish, the construction and consecration of a new church, and later renovation and furnishings.

Cycling Through Laugna

The “Hügelland aktiv” cycling tour passes through Laugna. At the village entrance, the route continues along the cycle path toward Aspach. This moderately difficult circular tour runs through the mostly hilly countryside in the southeast of Dillingen district and starts at the pilgrimage church in Wertingen-Gottmannshofen.

From there, the route runs counterclockwise through Geratshofen, Rischgau, Bocksberg, Laugna, Rieblingen, Possenried, Hirschbach, Wortelstetten, Hinterried, Frauenstetten and Reatshofen, returning to Gottmannshofen. Laugna is therefore one section of the loop, not its starting point. Check the current local signs before setting out.

Events on the Castle Grounds

The extensive grounds of the Bocksberg Castle ruins host the annual Bocksberg Castle Market and a rock festival. The 2026 edition of the Castle Market was the 20th. If you are planning to attend on a specific date, check the relevant event dates. Discover more destinations:
