Regional Setting: The Wider Bayreuth Destination
The landscape changes across the wider Bayreuth destination. The Franconian Switzerland shapes the western and southern parts of the Bayreuth district with its varied, gentle scenery. In the north, the Fichtelgebirge shapes the landscape with its dark forests and granite boulder fields.
The network of trails also needs to be viewed regionally: the Bayreuth district has a well-maintained network of around 1,400 kilometres of cross-country ski trails, hiking trails and cycling routes. Long-distance and themed cycling routes explore the district, passing through different natural landscapes and leading to their distinctive features and tourist highlights. Local circular cycling routes make the network denser and enable route planning over shorter distances. In the wider Bayreuth destination, the Ochsenkopf offers well-marked hiking trails, the “Alpine Coaster” all-weather toboggan run, a mountain cart track, the North and South gondola lifts, and downhill and singletrack trails. Winter sports facilities include a 1,900 m-long south-facing slope and four groomed downhill pistes; some have snowmaking facilities and floodlights until 10 pm.
Garden Art and Regional History
Fantaisie Palace Park brings together design elements from the Rococo, Sentimental and Historicist periods. The park is also home to the Garden Art Museum at Fantaisie Palace, which opened in July 2000 as the first German museum at the time devoted exclusively to the history of garden art. Fantaisie Palace Park is in the wider Bayreuth destination.
Another historical setting is the Franconian Switzerland Museum in Tüchersfeld. It is housed in the so-called Judenhof, a complex of buildings dating from the 18th century. In the wider Bayreuth destination, Fantaisie focuses on garden art and park design; in Tüchersfeld, the museum is housed in the historic Judenhof. In the wider Bayreuth destination, the Devil’s Cave is accessible only as part of a guided tour. In the wider Bayreuth destination, visitors can explore the three chambers of Sophien Cave at their own pace during “Sophie at Night,” without a group tour; lighting effects and music accompany the experience. The wider Bayreuth destination is also home to the German Camera Museum in Plech, with more than 15,000 exhibits.
Consider which of these focal points is most important for your stay.
