Explore Abtswind through its wine-growing landscape, historic buildings and hiking routes. When searching for hotels, it helps to decide in advance which of these highlights you want to shape your stay.

Winegrowing and Wine Trail

The Abtswind Wine Trail was inaugurated on June 11, 1971, as Bavaria’s first wine trail. It includes a wine garden. The vineyard path runs through the “Schild” and “Altenberg” slopes; barrel bottoms and trophies mark the way. At the highest point of the trail stands an alabaster-built rotunda with a table and benches. In good visibility, the view extends up to 100 kilometers to the Spessart and Rhön mountains. The trail thus brings together winegrowing, the named slopes and a lookout point.

Abtswind has around 70 hectares of vineyards. Typical Steigerwald wines grow on gypsum keuper soils. The tourist information office of the Abtswind market town invites visitors to discover and taste the variety of Abtswind wines. If wine is a central part of your visit, the wine trail and this invitation offer two specific ways to experience the area.

Historic Town Center and Buildings

The historic town center is home to magnificent sandstone houses. St. Mary’s Church stands within the walls of the old fortified church. The parish church of St. Mary features a late Gothic winged altarpiece. Abtswind’s Lower and Upper Gatehouses stand on the main street. The cemetery has arcades and a wooden pulpit. The architectural sights therefore range from sandstone houses and gatehouses to church and cemetery details. In the wider Kitzingen destination, the Falter Tower and the Old Main Bridge add to the historic picture: the Falter Tower was built from 1469 to 1496 as a watchtower on the outer town wall; the bridge is first documented in 1300.

Museum and Friedrichsberg

The privately run Kaulfuss Herb and Spice Museum is housed in a 450-year-old barn with 1,000 square meters of space across four floors. If you would like to include the museum as a set part of your itinerary, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

The 463-meter-high Friedrichsberg lies in the southeastern part of the Abtswind municipal area. Count Johann Friedrich of Castell-Rüdenhausen had Friedrichsberg Hunting Lodge built there in 1735. The mountain is also a crossroads for numerous hiking routes with stretches of natural woodland. Friedrichsberg thus combines a historic connection with the landscape of its hiking trails.

Hiking and Tour Planning

The TraumRunde Abtswind is an 8.3-kilometer hiking route with far-reaching views and plenty of nature. It also offers an opportunity to stop for refreshments at a winery. The route partly follows narrow woodland paths and climbs uphill, so it is not suitable for strollers or wheeled walkers. Its length and this limitation can help you assess the tour in light of your planned distance and mobility.
