History and winegrowing are at the heart of a stay in Iphofen. The historic town center, museums and vineyard trails offer a variety of experiences. Whether you are especially interested in architectural history, exhibitions or landscapes, these themes offer different starting points for planning your visit.

Historic Old Town and Museums

Iphofen’s historic town center has a fully preserved fortification system. Winding lanes, townhouses from centuries past and magnificent churches shape the townscape. The fortifications include a town wall with towers and gates, one of which is the well-known Rödelseer Gate. St. Vitus Parish Church houses a sculpture of John the Evangelist by Riemenschneider.

The “Iphöfer Geschichte(n)” exhibition in the history barn behind the town hall features a talking town model, zoom-in displays and a lapidarium of Iphofen stone sculptures. The Knauf Museum has a different focus: it presents more than 200 replicas of important museum pieces from around the world and stages exclusive special exhibitions each year alongside its permanent exhibition. The history of the museum building is also remarkable: In the 1960s, gypsum manufacturer and arts patron Dr. Alfons N. Knauf began converting a splendid Iphofen Baroque building dating from 1688 into a private museum.

Winegrowing and Trails Around Iphofen

The Iphofen Historical Vineyard illustrates important periods in Franconian winegrowing, from the late Middle Ages to the 1960s. Along the Kronsberg vineyard site, the grape-variety trail introduces important traditional Franconian grape varieties. The terroir f viewpoint at the Julius-Echter-Berg vineyard site offers views over Iphofen and its vineyards.

The circular hiking trails also differ in length: The Kronsberg Trail, marked i 2, runs for about 7 kilometers through the Iphofen vineyard site of Kronsberg. The approximately 13-kilometer N1 leads around the Nenzenheim district to natural attractions. The starting point and finish are at the Nenzenheim sports field; viewpoints include Wolfsee, the Andreas-Därr Tower and the “Am Stöckig” site. Approximate trail lengths provide a first point of comparison when planning your visit. Check local trail conditions before hiking the N1.
