If you’re planning a trip to Marktbreit, you can explore the town through its different themes: the fortifications with their towers and gates, Kapellenberg, trails through the cultural landscape and the Main offer different perspectives. The following routes and historic sites can help you choose a focus for your stay.

Town fortifications and Kapellenberg

The “Marktbreit Tower Trail” is an approximately 1.2-kilometre circular route along Marktbreit’s town fortifications, which are still well preserved in parts. They include numerous towers and gates, and information boards explain the fortifications. The trail is considered family-friendly. Its circular layout and manageable length set it apart from the longer cultural trail connecting Marktbreit with Ochsenfurt and Gnodstadt.

Above Marktbreit, on Kapellenberg, is the Roman camp dating from the Augustan period. The site covers about 37 hectares and can now be explored on a circular trail. This offers two distinct ways to explore history: the Tower Trail focuses on the town fortifications, while Kapellenberg is about the Roman camp and its location above the town.

The Malerwinkel is also among Marktbreit’s historic attractions. After extensive restoration, it was converted into a museum in 1991. Check current visiting information before your visit.

Trails between the Main and the cultural landscape

The “TraumRunde” starts at the Main car park by the Old Crane in Marktbreit, right on the banks of the Main. If you’re planning your route from there, note that this starting point is on the riverbank. You can check the municipal route details before travelling if they’re important to your plans.

The “Gnodstadter Dreieck” cultural trail follows a different route: its nine stops are spread over 15 kilometres. The trail provides information about the cultural landscape and connects Marktbreit with Ochsenfurt and Gnodstadt. Compared with the approximately 1.2-kilometre circular route along the town fortifications, it is by far the longer of the two routes for which a distance is given. You can decide based on the distance whether a short walk or a longer route better suits your travel plans.

For cyclists, the Main Cycle Route is another specific reference point: it passes through Marktbreit. In 2008, the ADFC awarded it five stars, making it the first long-distance cycle route to receive this rating. The award refers to that year and describes the recognition the route received at the time.

At Kapellenberg, the “Liebespfad” (Love Trail) leads to the panoramic heights on a wine-experience hike. Four regional wines are offered, and visitors learn about Franconia, grapevines and wine. This experience combines the trail with regional wine and landscape themes. If you’re planning the hike, check the latest information about the wine-experience hike in advance.

Kitzingen as a broader travel destination

Kitzingen also has its own historical context, distinct from the Marktbreit locations mentioned above. The Falterturm in Kitzingen, formerly called “Falltorturm,” was built from 1469 to 1496 as a watchtower on the outer town wall. The Old Main Bridge, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300.

Kitzingen’s historic character is also reflected in its town hall on the market square: it dates from the 16th century and was built by Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen in the Renaissance style. These buildings in Kitzingen add to the historical themes of the broader travel destination, but they are not stops in Marktbreit. So when searching for hotels in Marktbreit, you can first consider whether you want to focus your stay mainly on local trails, the Main or the town’s historical attractions.
