Sommerhausen is a historic town on the Main. When planning a trip, several sides of the town come together: the architectural history of the old town, cultural events, wine country, and routes for cyclists or families.

Old Town, Theater and Architectural History

The Torturm Theater in Sommerhausen was founded in 1950 by Luigi Malipiero. It is housed in a gate tower through which visitors enter the old town from the direction of Würzburg. The theater’s history and the town’s layout meet here in a specific building. St. Bartholomew’s Church offers a different historical perspective: its free-standing tower dates back to the 13th century. The Sommerhausen Heritage Trail starts at the town hall and runs for just under 1.5 kilometers through past eras, architectural details and local history. It brings together different historical themes, while the gate tower and church tower each draw attention to a single building.

Events Throughout the Year

The pottery market takes place every year in late September; the exact dates may vary. If this market is a deciding factor for your trip, it is worth checking the event dates. The local events calendar also includes wine festivals organized by local associations. The program also features music and readings at the town hall. Sommerhausen Castle is now used for a variety of events.

Wine Country and terroir f

The terroir f in Sommerhausen is a sculpture park above the vineyards, with sweeping views across the vine-covered slopes along the Main valley. It is part of the Sommerhausen Wine Culture Trail. It can serve as a stop on wine tours, as well as a place to rest and picnic. The sculptures, views and these uses give the site a distinctive role between a visit to the countryside and an exploration of wine.

Cycling and Walking

The Main Cycle Route passes Sommerhausen along the banks of the Main. Signposts invite cyclists to make a detour to the attractive old town. Cyclists can therefore consider the riverside route and a visit to the historic town center as separate parts of their plans. The Heritage Trail has a different focus: it starts at the town hall and explores historical eras, architectural styles and local history along a route of just under 1.5 kilometers.

Adventure Trails for Families

Willis Schnecken-Weg and Lillis Entdecker-Tour are adventure trails for families in Sommerhausen. Sommerhausen Animal Park also has a nature adventure playground. The town therefore offers both named adventure trails and a playground in the animal park. If these destinations are a priority for your stay, you can include them in your daily plans alongside the historic and wine-related stops.

Culture in the Wider WĂĽrzburg Destination

Ochsenfurt, also in the wider Würzburg destination, offers its own appeal for history enthusiasts. Its historic old town is surrounded by an almost completely intact fortification with numerous town gates and towers. Ochsenfurt’s New Town Hall dates back to the 15th century; the Lanzentürmchen houses a unique clock featuring figures and the phases of the moon. These are further examples of regional architectural history, alongside Sommerhausen’s gate tower and church tower.
