You can explore Thüngersheim when choosing where to stay through its trails, connections to wine and visible traces of local culture. The places and routes each offer a different focus: from links between named hiking trails to art and learning, as well as half-timbered houses in the old town center.

Trails through the municipal area

The Bocksbeutel Trail runs from Veitshöchheim to Retzbach through the Thüngersheim municipal area and is an alternative to the Main Hiking Trail. Trail conditions may vary; check them before setting out. The Wine Trail connects the Bocksbeutel Trail with the Orchid Trail. Information boards provide an overview of grape varieties and viticulture.

The two trail descriptions offer different points of reference: the Bocksbeutel Trail names Veitshöchheim and Retzbach as its endpoints, while the Wine Trail is described by its connection to the Orchid Trail and its information about grape varieties and viticulture. You can distinguish between the routes based on whether your plans focus on the connection between the named places or on the trail’s emphasis on viticulture.

Ariadne and Vinomax

At the terroir-f site on Thüngersheim’s Johannisberg stands a large bronze sculpture of Ariadne from Greek mythology. The figure gives the site a specific mythological connection. Vinomax rises prominently above the Scharlachberg’s beds of lower Muschelkalk limestone. It connects wine with research and education. These are two distinct themes: the mythological figure on Johannisberg and Vinomax’s connection to wine, research and education.

The route to Vinomax follows Weinbergsweg and Scharlachsgrund uphill to the destination. Check the signs on site if you are following this route description. The named sections give you a specific direction for planning without assuming a particular starting point.

The old town center and nearby area

The winding lanes of the old town center are home to several well-preserved or fully restored half-timbered houses. Their distinctive construction shapes the streetscape in places. If you are getting to know Thüngersheim through its townscape, this offers a different focus from the trails and sites on Johannisberg and Scharlachberg.

Nearby, just beyond the edge of Thüngersheim, a historic wine press stands right beside the vineyards. The area between Thüngersheim and Güntersleben, designated a nature reserve in 1940, is also close by. The wine press is a historical landmark among the vineyards, while the area’s designation offers a distinct perspective on the surrounding landscape.

In the wider Würzburg destination

Within the wider Würzburg destination, the district is set in a cultural landscape of vineyards, forests, expansive Gäu plains and the Main Valley. Other places in the district also have their own historical highlights. Ochsenfurt’s historic old town is enclosed by an almost complete fortification with numerous town gates and towers. The New Town Hall dates from the 15th century, and the Lanzentürmchen houses a unique clock with figures and a moon phase display.

In Röttingen, the oldest buildings in Brattenstein Castle date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle was the seat of various noble families, including the Lords of Hohenlohe. Since July 21, 1984, its courtyard has served as the venue for the Röttingen FRANKENFESTSPIELE. The wider destination therefore encompasses not only the cultural landscape but also distinctive examples of town fortifications, historic architecture and theatrical tradition.
