Three distinct themes can help you plan your trip to Winterhausen: the historic town center, trails and the Main. A walking tour of the town center and the Local History Museum offer a different experience from a longer hike or spending time by the water. The destinations below make these options more specific and distinguish between Winterhausen and the wider destination of Eibelstadt.

Old Town and Local History

A walking tour of the historic town center introduces Winterhausen’s notable buildings, architectural ensembles and picturesque lanes. The ensembles draw attention to groups of buildings rather than individual houses alone; together with the lanes, they shape the townscape, which you can explore on foot. The town hall was built in 1738 and features rich Baroque details. The local history association runs the Local History Museum and organizes exhibitions, guided tours and talks about Winterhausen’s history. The frequency and availability of the program may vary.

At Grabenrain, the flood protection embankment has a historical connection to Winterhausen’s former fortifications.

The Main and Trails

Winterhausen’s preserved old ferry landing provides access to the Main for swimming and water sports. Please observe local water safety conditions.

The 14-kilometer European Cultural Trail “Sun, Moon and Stones” starts at the Mainlände in Winterhausen, passes Rathausplatz and St. Nicholas Church, and climbs to the Mondguckerin viewpoint. Some sections are steep and require sturdy footwear. Check trail conditions before setting out.

Nearby, a 13-kilometer loop passes through Sommerhausen and GoĂźmannsdorf, through vineyards and past a shell limestone quarry, with views of the Main. It takes about four hours. The loop is one kilometer shorter than the Winterhausen Cultural Trail; its approximate duration also provides a useful time estimate for planning.

Eibelstadt in the Wider Destination

In Eibelstadt, a 1.4-kilometer traffic-calmed path follows the fully preserved town wall and passes the towers of the former fortifications. The Eibelstadt Local History Museum displays original stones from the Lügensteine. The Chapel of the Cross, locally known as “Kerchla,” was completed in 1661. St. Nicholas Parish Church houses a Crucifixion group created around 1515 in the workshop of Tilman Riemenschneider. The Crucifixion group was created about a century and a half before the chapel was completed.

The Eibelstadt Mainlände includes a riverside promenade and an extensive network of paths for walkers and athletes. Right beside the Main, it also has a three-hectare leisure and recreation area with a multipurpose lawn, a large children’s playground, a slackline, a picnic lawn and a boules court. The terroir-f viewpoint in the Eibelstadter Kapellenberg vineyard explains how to identify grape varieties and provides information about their history and production.
