Castell: Silvaner, Vineyards and History
Accommodation in Castell
You can explore Castell while planning your stay through guided vineyard experiences, the C5 hiking trail and local history. If you are looking for a hotel in Castell, you can first consider which of these themes is especially important for your trip.
Silvaner and the Vineyard in Bloom
The guided Silvaner experience combines a hike through Castell’s Hohnart, Schlossberg and Kirchberg vineyards with a tasting of three Silvaner wines in the vineyard. Visits can be arranged by appointment. The experience focuses on both the trails through the named vineyards and the wine tasting.
Another guided experience focuses on wild vineyard tulips: the spring walk “A Riot of Colour in the Vineyard” follows Castell’s Schlossberg and draws attention to the rare, protected plants. Depending on the weather, they bloom between 12 and 28 April; the timing varies from year to year. Guided programmes can also be arranged by appointment. The two vineyard experiences have different focuses: one combines a hike with a Silvaner tasting, while the other draws attention to the tulips in bloom.
The C5 Hiking Trail
The C5 Castell hiking trail starts and ends in Castell. Along the way, you’ll find the Gerichtslinde (court lime tree), vineyard tulips, the castle tower ruins and the Celtic rampart. Farther along the route, there are views across the Main Valley and, in good weather, as far as the Rhön. The C5 therefore focuses on the route, its notable waypoints and the views, while the guided vineyard experiences focus on Silvaner and the tulips, respectively.
Palace Park and Museum Barn
Castell Palace Park was laid out from 1686 to 1690, at the same time as the palace, during the early Baroque period. Their shared origins connect the two sites historically, giving the park a distinct place in Castell’s architectural history.
The Castell Museum Barn documents winegrowing in Castell from the past to the modern era. Illustrated and written displays, along with numerous exhibits, convey this long span of time. Tools belonging to a cabinetmaker from around 1900 are also on display. The Museum Barn offers insights into both the history of winegrowing and a specific craft from around 1900.
Historic Sites in the Wider Kitzingen Travel Destination
Other historic buildings in the wider Kitzingen travel destination offer further insight into the region. The Falterturm, formerly called the “Falltorturm,” was built in Kitzingen between 1469 and 1496 as a watchtower on the outer town wall. Kitzingen’s Old Main Bridge, also known as “Pippinsbrücke,” has medieval origins and was first mentioned in a document in 1300. The town hall on the market square is also a significant historic building from the 16th century, built by Hans Eckart von Schaffhausen in the Renaissance style.
In 2026, Kitzingen is offering a public guided tour through the historic centre and across the market square, introducing visitors to the town’s history. Check the dates before your trip. Alongside Castell’s vineyard and museum themes, this offers a distinct focus on urban history in the wider travel destination.
