Grafengehaig: Cross-country Ski Trails, Mill Hiking Trail and KU 5 Cycling Route
Accommodation in Grafengehaig
Grafengehaig lies in the Frankenwald Nature Park on the western side of Steinbruchberg. Activities range from winter sports in WalberngrĂĽn to hiking and cycling routes that start in Grafengehaig. This lets you tailor your travel plans to your preferred activity: cross-country ski trails and a sledding hill are winter options, while the Mill Hiking Trail and KU 5 offer different routes through the landscape. If you are looking for a hotel, it may help to decide in advance whether winter activities, hiking or cycling will shape your stay.
Winter in WalberngrĂĽn
WalberngrĂĽn has a winter sports center with around 20 kilometers of groomed cross-country ski trails. This includes an approximately 2.5-kilometer floodlit trail with 80 meters of elevation gain. The roughly 20 kilometers refer to the entire trail network; the shorter floodlit trail is one specific section of it. Snow and operating conditions can vary, so check them before including the trails in your travel plans. The municipality also has a sledding hill.
Hiking and cycling from Grafengehaig
The Mill Hiking Trail starts in Grafengehaig and is about 18 kilometers long. It passes numerous mills and streams and leads through valleys and clearings. Trail conditions may vary. A different option is the KU 5 cycling circuit. It is about 14 kilometers long, starts in Grafengehaig and follows low-traffic roads around the Rehbach Valley and its old mills. Via Gösmes in the Hof district and Grünlas, the route passes through small Frankenwald villages with slate roofs before returning to its starting point. This short but challenging ride lies in the Frankenwald Nature Park. The two routes differ in activity and course: the hiking trail passes mills and streams and goes through valleys and clearings; KU 5 is a challenging cycling loop with road sections and villages. Check current route conditions before setting out.
More to explore in the wider Kulmbach destination
The wider Kulmbach destination offers more nature and culture. The nature trail on Kulmbach’s Rehberg is about four kilometers long and has 21 learning stations. The Frankenwaldsteigla “Rehbergweg” is an 11-kilometer loop from Plassenburg to Rehberg, through Kulmbach’s old town and back to the starting point. Trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out. The two routes differ in length and focus: the shorter nature trail centers on its learning stations, while the longer Rehbergweg loop passes Plassenburg, Rehberg and the old town.
Plassenburg houses the German Tin Figure Museum, with more than 300,000 individual figures in around 150 dioramas. The Bavarian Brewery Museum offers a different perspective: its exhibition space covers more than 3,000 square meters and is dedicated to the history and art of brewing beer. A visit ends with a tasting sip from the Glass Museum Brewery. In the wider Kulmbach destination, the German Steam Locomotive Museum in Neuenmarkt preserves more than 30 steam locomotives in a historic railway setting that has evolved over time.
