Untersteinach offers several starting points for planning your trip: a leisure complex, the parish church of St. Oswald with its distinctive interior design, and a cycle route that starts here. You can use the themes that interest you locally to guide your choice of stay.

Leisure complex in the Hummendorfer Au

The leisure complex in the Hummendorfer Au in Untersteinach has a football pitch, a beach volleyball court and a barbecue area. These three facilities cater to different interests: playing football, beach volleyball and barbecuing together. If you plan to visit the complex, check the current terms of use in advance.

St. Oswald: architecture and painted decoration

The interior of the parish church of St. Oswald combines a Late Gothic net vault with Baroque double galleries. The gallery paintings depict numerous biblical scenes. They were created after new wooden galleries were installed in the choir in 1715 and in the nave in 1729/30. The two dates mark separate construction phases and help place the paintings in their historical context.

The vault was repainted in the Baroque style in 1955. Musical angels and colourful floral arrangements define the decoration described here. Together with the galleries and biblical scenes, they create a multifaceted picture of the church interior: the architecture, subject matter and later painting are distinct elements of the design. Visitors interested in church art will find specific details here that help distinguish these layers.

Cycling from Untersteinach

The 22-kilometre Steinach-Rodach cycle route starts in Untersteinach, where it joins the Kulmbach–Bischofsgrün Main Cycle Route. Its stated length gives a clear indication for planning a cycling stage. Check current route conditions before setting off; the length alone says nothing about the state of the route.

Kulmbach as the wider destination

The wider destination of Kulmbach offers additional routes to choose from. The nature trail on Kulmbacher Rehberg is about four kilometres long and has 21 learning stations. A different option is the eleven-kilometre Frankenwaldsteigla circular trail, the “Rehbergweg”: it leads from Plassenburg Castle to Rehberg, through Kulmbach’s old town and back to the starting point. Their lengths and routes distinguish the two options, without implying a walking time or level of difficulty.

The wider destination of Kulmbach also offers a variety of cultural highlights. The German Tin Figure Museum at Plassenburg Castle contains more than 300,000 individual figures arranged in around 150 dioramas. The Bavarian Brewery Museum devotes more than 3,000 square metres to the history and art of brewing; a visit ends with a small sample from the museum’s glass brewery.

Burg Zwernitz in Wonsees was first mentioned in an official document in 1156 as the ancestral seat of the Walpoten family. Its tower can be climbed and offers a sweeping view across the Franconian Switzerland Nature Park. The castle lies right next to Sanspareil Rock Garden, where the rock theatre in the grove, the Oriental Building and the Kitchen Building have all been preserved to this day. These Kulmbach destinations add their own cultural and scenic character alongside the attractions in Untersteinach.
