Wonsees: Juniper Valley, hiking trails and culture
Accommodation in Wonsees
Wonsees offers nature, hiking opportunities and historic places. When planning, you can focus on different things: the protected Juniper Valley, trails with specific destinations or lengths, and buildings with special historical significance. This lets you tailor your stay to what interests you locally.
Nature and hiking trails
The Juniper Valley near Wonsees is a sun-exposed, nutrient-poor grassland interspersed with juniper bushes and is a protected landscape feature. Light-loving plant species such as the fragrant orchid and the fringed gentian thrive there. The sunny location suits these light-loving plants and gives the valley its distinctive natural character.
Several different details can be considered when choosing a route. The MarktmĂĽhle in Wonsees lies directly on the Franconian Mountain Hiking Trail and was built in 1730. One section of the Schwalbachtal Trail follows a narrow, green path from Zedersitz to Wonsees. The official hiking guide also recommends the 13.5-kilometre Great Wonsees Adventure Loop in Wonsees. This offers a named route section connecting two places alongside a circular route with a specific stated length. Zedersitz and Wonsees are the reference points for the Schwalbachtal Trail; for the adventure loop, the 13.5-kilometre length is explicitly part of the description.
History and culture
The region’s cultural history includes places with distinct characters. Sanspareil is home to the Morgenländischer Bau, a small palace designed in an Oriental style. There is a natural stage in the rock garden, where performances still take place in the ruin theatre. The Margrave Church of St. Laurentius served both as a fortified church and as a horse stable. Special guided tours run from 1 April to 15 October: they take place every fourth Sunday and alternate between Zwernitz Castle and the rock garden. Check the specific dates with the operator before planning your visit.
Kneipp facilities in Wonsees
The Wonsees Kneipp facility is a freshly renovated stone shelter with a Kneipp pool. A wooden slider can be used to raise the water to the desired Kneipp level. There are three Kneipp facilities in the municipality of Wonsees in total.

Another distinct cultural attraction in Kulmbach is the Bavarian Brewery Museum. It has more than 3,000 square metres of exhibition space dedicated to the history and art of brewing beer; a visit ends with a sample sip from the Glass Museum Brewery.
