Chiemsee: Islands, Water and Culture
Accommodation in Chiemsee
With an area of just under 80 km², Chiemsee is the largest lake located entirely within the Free State of Bavaria. Visitors looking to combine nature, island culture and activities on the water will find a range of highlights here. These include an important bird sanctuary, historic sites, art, and opportunities for sailing and boating.
Waterscapes and birdlife
The “Chiemseegebiet mit Alz” bird sanctuary covers the entire lake. It is one of the largest breeding, resting and wintering grounds for waterbirds in southern Germany. Up to 40,000 birds are found in this natural area. For planning your trip, this offers a different focus from the island’s history or activities on the water: birdlife and the protected status of the area shape how you experience the lake.
Islands, monasteries and cultural heritage
Herrenchiemsee is the largest island in Chiemsee. At the landing stage on Herreninsel is the former Augustinian Canons’ Monastery, with a constitutional museum, historic halls and the Chiemsee Painters Gallery. Since summer 2025, Herrenchiemsee Palace has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site “The Palaces of King Ludwig II of Bavaria: Neuschwanstein, Linderhof, Schachen and Herrenchiemsee.”
Frauenwörth Monastery was founded in the eighth century and is still home to Benedictine nuns. Art history is also part of Chiemsee’s cultural profile: Frauenchiemsee is one of Europe’s oldest artists’ colonies (1828). Six families on Fraueninsel still make their living from fishing; the island is also home to traditional pottery workshops.
Every year during the summer months, exhibitions about the Chiemsee painters are held at the Inselgalerie Gailer in the adjacent Vicarage of the Carolingian Gate Hall on Fraueninsel. If you are interested in these exhibitions, plan your visit for the summer months and check the latest dates in advance. The circular path around Fraueninsel offers a wheelchair-accessible way to explore the island; check this information again before your trip.
Activities on and around the lake
The Chiemsee Cycle Route is a circular tour around the lake, approximately 60 kilometres long. The approximate route length can help you decide how much cycling to include in your trip; check the route conditions before setting off. This makes cycling a distinct focus alongside island visits and water sports, without conflating the different activities.
There are sailing schools, boat rentals and regattas at Chiemsee. For stand-up paddleboarding, numerous rental stations and tours are available along the shore. Visitors can also rent electric boats; private motorboats are subject to strict regulations. Since rental options and dates can change, and rules apply to where stand-up paddleboarding can start, check the relevant conditions before your trip.
These different interests each have their place: birdlife lends itself to a nature-focused visit, the islands offer historical and artistic attractions, and cycling and water sports add active options to your stay. Which of these is most important to you can guide your choice of base and how you plan your time at Chiemsee.
