Wörth a.d. Isar offers a range of reasons to visit: the historic town walk, local history museum and St. Laurentius Parish Church each explore different aspects of the town’s history. There are also events in the Schlosspark, walks along the Isar and a leisure facility at a lake in the eastern part of the municipality. If you are looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around whether culture, an event date or time in the river landscape is your priority.

Discover local history on a walk

The historic town walk features twelve information panels at buildings and public spaces. They provide historical and other interesting information about the locations, which visitors can discover on a walk through the town. This presents the town’s history across several specific stops. The walk is a good fit if you would like to learn about history as you stroll, rather than focusing on a single museum topic.

Local history and the Isar at the museum

The Wörth an der Isar Local History Museum tells the story of Wörth’s local history, with a focus on the Isar. The exhibition covers the castle, tavern and brewery, post office and railway, church, municipality and school. The topics are presented through exhibits, media stations, audio stations and a flip game. Visitors can therefore explore them in different ways: through exhibits, media and audio features, as well as a playful element. Isaria, an Isar mermaid, accompanies children on a journey through the past, offering a storytelling experience specifically for young visitors. The museum’s focus on the Isar gives it a regional accent within its wide range of topics.

St. Laurentius and historic architectural styles

St. Laurentius Parish Church is also a pilgrimage church dedicated to Our Lady of Good Counsel. The west apse and adjacent sections of the nave walls survive from a Romanesque church or chapel dating from the 11th or 12th century. The parish church was substantially extended to the east in the last third of the 17th century, and the remaining Romanesque structure was given a Baroque vault. St. Laurentius thus brings together older Romanesque elements and a later Baroque alteration in a clear chronological sequence.

The former Wörth Castle is a two-storey hipped-roof building with a mezzanine; its core dates from the 17th or 18th century. A mezzanine is an intermediate floor and is a specific feature of the building’s design. By comparison, the surviving Romanesque elements of St. Laurentius date back to the 11th or 12th century. The church and former castle therefore offer different points of reference for the town’s architectural history.

Events and lakeside recreation

The Kultur im Schlosspark Wörth e. V. association holds events at regular intervals in the Schlosspark. If you would like to plan your stay around an event, check the dates in advance.

Waketoolz Wakepark, formerly WakeLake, is a leisure facility at a lake in the eastern part of the municipality. The former name WakeLake is associated with water skiing on a former gravel pit lake. If water skiing is part of your plans, check the current name and operating information before travelling. This helps distinguish the former name from the practical details of planning a visit.

Walks in the Isar Valley

Wörth a.d. Isar is located in the Isar Valley, where walks are possible along the riverbanks. The river landscape offers a focus of its own alongside the town walk, museum and architectural history. When planning your stay, you can decide whether to focus on local history, an event date or walks by the river.
