Kranzberg combines local history with Pantaleonsberg and views across the Ampertal valley. If you are looking for a hotel in Kranzberg, you can choose your destination based on the themes of your stay: Baroque architecture, a viewpoint with a historical background, or the approximately 11-kilometre Way of St. James. These different themes can help you decide what to focus on during your visit before looking for overnight accommodation.

Hill, lake and Ampertal valley

Pantaleonsberg rises about 40 metres above the valley floor. Formerly a castle hill, it bears a name derived from the chapel there, which has been dedicated to Saint Pantaleon for centuries. From the hill, you can see across the Ampertal valley, with its agricultural land, Tertiary hills, the Amper River, and wetland and backwater areas. For trip planning, this brings together the historical origin of the name and views of different landscape features.

Kranzberger See offers a different connection to the landscape: it is nestled within the Amperauen nature conservation area. At Seehaus, there is a pizzeria or beer garden, as well as a playground for children. As individual facilities may change, check which services are currently available before your visit. In the Freising district, the Ampertal valley is used as a local recreation area for hiking and cycling.

Churches and local history

The Catholic parish church of St. Quirinus is located at KirchbergstraĂźe 10 and is a listed building. The Baroque hall church has two semicircular chapels. Georg Hieber built it from 1713 to 1716, incorporating the chancel-flanking tower of the older Church of St. Erasmus. The construction period, architect and older architectural feature incorporated into the building together provide a clearly defined building history.

There is also a historic courthouse dating from the 16th century in the town centre, which cannot be visited. The exhibition on Kranzberg’s local history is in the Old Schoolhouse by the church and is open by request. Therefore, arrange a visit to the exhibition in advance. The distinction is important for planning: the exhibition requires a prior request, while the courthouse cannot be visited.

Another church is the woodland church of St. Clemens. It is located in the centre of the Bavarian State Arboretum in the World Forest and adds a place of worship within this arboretum to Kranzberg’s cultural attractions.

The Way of St. James

The Freising Way of St. James is a northeastern access route to the Munich Way of St. James. It starts at Freising Cathedral Hill, passes through Vötting and Hohenbachern and by a chapel, then continues to Kranzberg. It is about 11 kilometres long. Its starting point, intermediate stops and onward route make it different from visiting individual cultural sites or the viewpoint: here, a named route is the focus of the trip. The distance given refers to the entire route described.
