When looking for a hotel in Marzling, it helps to distinguish local nature spots from the separate attractions in the wider destination of Freising. Marzling combines the Isar floodplains with a swimming lake and summer spots along the Isar; Freising adds trails, historic parts of the city and culture. You can therefore first decide whether your trip will focus on Marzling’s nature spots or on attractions in Freising.

Nature along the Isar and at the swimming lake

The Kleine Naturschleife Amper-Isar trail starts in Marzling and runs through the Isarauen nature reserve, with its green floodplain forests. The focus is therefore on the Isar floodplains and their forests. This distinguishes the trail from Stoibermühle swimming lake, which offers its own opportunities for spending time by the water.

Stoibermühle swimming lake has sunbathing lawns and a designated surfing area. These two areas offer different ways to spend your time: relaxing on the lawns or surfing in the designated area. In summer, you can also relax on a gravel bank along the Isar in Marzling. This makes it possible to distinguish a summer visit to the lake from time spent on the banks of the Isar.

In the area around Marzling

The Naturfreundehaus of the Freising local group is located between Rudlfing and Hangenham near Marzling. In summer, its terrace offers views across the Erdinger Moos to Munich and sometimes as far as the Alps. The house can be reached by bike, on foot or by car. It is open for food and drink on most weekends and public holidays; check the hut calendar before visiting.

Freising as a distinct cultural and natural setting

The Ampertal valley offers its own natural setting in the wider destination of Freising. It is designated a landscape conservation area and is used for hiking and cycling in the Freising district. At the same time, it is home to numerous animal and plant species that are particularly worthy of protection, including four of the 16 dragonfly species threatened with extinction in Bavaria.

The trails in Freising also differ in their destinations and purposes. The 13.5-kilometre Kultur & Natur circular trail leads to important sights in the city. The Freising Way of St James is an approximately 11-kilometre northern feeder route to the Munich Way of St James and begins at Freising Cathedral Hill. A circular route taking in sights and a pilgrimage route serving as a connecting trail therefore offer different distances and points of focus.

In Freising’s historic old town, around Marienplatz, stand burghers’ and cathedral canons’ houses dating from the Gothic period to the Baroque; a Marian column dating from 1674 is also located there. Freising Cathedral on Cathedral Hill has a crypt and the Beast Column. The City Museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history.

The Schafhof in Freising is a centre for contemporary art in Upper Bavaria. Exhibitions featuring works by international and local artists are held there throughout the year. The Johannismarkt and an Advent market are also held at the Schafhof every year, where artisans present selected, high-quality one-of-a-kind pieces. The Weihenstephan Art Trail passes almost 30 contemporary artworks across the campus; each of its two circular routes takes just over an hour.

The Weihenstephan Gardens are also part of the Freising setting: they are located on the site of a former Benedictine monastery and are maintained by Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences. The courtyard garden has a viewing terrace with views of the Alpine panorama. The five-hectare display garden for perennials and woody plants tests perennials, woody plants and new roses for their practical value; its beds and plantings are currently being renewed.
