Olching combines recreational areas along the Amper with opportunities to enjoy nature, exercise and culture. The reason for your visit may therefore help you decide where to stay: would you like to spend time outdoors, attend a cultural event or plan your trip around the folk festival? The town offers a range of options for each.

Amper River meadows, trails and nature

The Amper River meadows between Esting, Olching and Geiselbullach provide a valuable recreational area. Small trails away from the roads, numerous benches and gently sloping riverbanks invite you to walk and relax. In the Olching floodplain forest, a fitness trail also runs alongside the Amper for around 2.5 kilometres, with twelve stations and exercise equipment. If you would like to include some exercise in your stay, you’ll find a clearly defined route here; its length of around 2.5 kilometres is approximate.

The Olching Bird Park offers another way to enjoy nature. In an area of almost 20,000 square metres in the Amper River meadows, it is home to around 500 birds from all over the world. You can see them in aviaries, pavilions, pond areas and open enclosures. Check the seasonal opening hours before your visit.

Lake Olching is a swimming lake with a water surface of about 14 hectares. Many visitors come to swim in summer. GrĂĽnanger in Schwaigfeld offers something different: this large park includes trees, sports and play areas, a sledding hill and a stream where children are allowed to play. In summer, an event area there hosts, among other things, an open-air event and a running event.

The Ammer-Amper Cycle Route also passes through Olching. The route runs either via Emmering to FĂĽrstenfeldbruck or as far as Dachau. This gives you a choice of two described directions on the cycle route, in addition to local trails. The town also lists Olching Golf Club, with an 18-hole championship course and a short-game area. Both facilities were completely renovated and modernised in 2012/2013.

Culture, history and events

The Kulturwerkstatt am Olchinger MĂĽhlbach, or KOM for short, is run by the town. It hosts cultural events and also serves as a meeting place for young and old, as well as a hub for clubs and initiatives. A town announcement from 2025 states that the City of Olching puts on more than 25 cultural events of its own at the KOM each year; individual programmes change.

Historical landmarks include the Church of St Peter and Paul, consecrated on 22 September 1901, and Geiselbullach Castle with its park and St Nepomuk Chapel. The castle, park and chapel were built in 1726 by Johann Adam Geisler. The two dates mark different points in Olching’s history.

The Olching Folk Festival takes place every year. It starts on the first Friday of the Whitsun school holidays and lasts ten days. The extensive programme at the central festival grounds includes numerous rides, fairground attractions and culinary specialities. If you would like to plan your trip around the festival, check the specific event dates and the programme for that year, as details may change.

When looking for a hotel in Olching, it helps to decide what you want to focus on during your stay: the Amper River meadows and floodplain forest offer trails and nature, while the KOM presents a cultural events programme. The exact dates of the folk festival, in turn, are key to planning when to visit. This lets you match the local options to the reason for your trip without treating the different offerings as interchangeable.
