Zolling: Church, Amper Valley and Anglberger Pond

The Catholic parish church of St. John the Baptist in Zolling is a Late Gothic building dating from the second half of the 15th century, around 1450. It provides an architectural highlight alongside the municipality’s nature and leisure attractions.

The Amper Valley near Zolling offers many hiking trails and natural bodies of water. The municipal area also includes Anglberger Pond near Zolling, where summer swimming is available in a body of water covering around 19,000 square metres. Hiking and summer swimming therefore offer a range of activities. Check the current conditions before visiting the pond.

Stand-up paddleboarding is permitted at Anglberger Pond. Please be considerate of people seeking relaxation and other swimmers. Also check the local rules for stand-up paddleboarding before setting out.

More nature and culture in the wider destination of Freising

In Freising district, the Amper Valley is designated as a landscape conservation area. It is home to numerous animal and plant species that are particularly worthy of protection, including four of the 16 dragonfly species threatened with extinction in Bavaria. The valley is also used as a local recreation area for hiking and cycling.

There is also a time-related detail to bear in mind when planning a cycling trip: the Freising district cycling map, presented in 2021, included the entire local cycle network, the Isar Cycle Path, the four-star-rated Ammer-Amper Cycle Path and around 20 suggested cycling tours. Map and route details may have changed since it was presented, so check for the latest information before setting out.

Different aspects of the city’s history come together in Freising. Freising Cathedral on Cathedral Hill features a crypt and the Beast Column. The historic old town around Marienplatz includes civic and canons’ houses dating from the Gothic to the Baroque period; the Marian Column, erected in 1674, also stands there. The city museum presents around 350 selected objects and groups of objects relating to Freising’s history.

Two routes differ both in purpose and in length. The 13.5-kilometre Culture & Nature Circular Trail takes you to important sights in Freising. The Freising Way of St James starts at Cathedral Hill and is an approximately 11-kilometre northern feeder route to the Munich Way of St James. This gives you a sightseeing circular route and a pilgrimage feeder route to choose from, each suited to different planning considerations.

The Weihenstephan Art Trail passes almost 30 contemporary works by regionally and internationally recognised artists across the campus. It consists of two circular walks, each taking a little over an hour. The Art Trail can therefore be gauged by the approximate time per circuit, while the Culture & Nature Circular Trail is defined by its length of 13.5 kilometres. In Freising Forest, the Freising Forest Adventure Trail is an approximately 2-kilometre circular route with 23 stops in total, featuring information boards, information and play activities.

The Weihenstephan Gardens also offer a variety of highlights. They are located on the grounds of a former Benedictine monastery and are managed by the Weihenstephan-Triesdorf University of Applied Sciences. The courtyard garden has a viewing terrace overlooking the Alpine panorama. The five-hectare trial garden for perennials and woody plants assesses the practical value of perennials, woody plants and new rose varieties; existing beds and plantings are currently being renovated.
