Schwarzenbach lies in the heart of the Northern Upper Palatinate Forest Nature Park. The town is situated in the Upper Palatinate Hills, at the foot of Eichelberg and beside the Haidenaab floodplains. Nature, trails and the municipality’s history offer a range of starting points for planning your trip; on site, you can also find information to help you plan cycling tours and your journey.

Landscape and Nature Reserve

The Haidenaab flows through the municipality of Schwarzenbach; its banks provide habitats for rare plants and birds. Nearby is the Schießlweiher nature reserve, which forms part of an old chain of ponds. This chain of ponds served primarily to provide a steady water supply to the hammer mills in the Haidenaab Valley. At Schießlweiher, a natural area and a historical connection to the valley’s water supply come together.

In the Manteler Forest area, very nutrient-poor conditions in the tributaries’ catchment area led to the development of a very rare pond-bottom flora and a peaty siltation zone in the Schießlweiher area. The Bavarian Nature Conservation Fund owns the pond and helps protect rare and endangered species such as amphibians and dragonflies there. It is clearly visible from the paths south and east of the lake. To protect the siltation zone, please stay on the paths.

Cycling and Other Activities

Schwarzenbach is a good base for running, Nordic walking, hiking, cycling and mountain biking. Two cycling routes pass through the town: the Haidenaab-CreuĂźen Valley Floodplain Cycle Route and the Leuchtenberg Tour. These named routes give you specific points of reference when planning a cycling tour. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest information before setting off.

At the start of Pechhofer StraĂźe, the Radl-Point offers parking and information about the cycling network. If you are planning a tour, you will find a place there to take care of both practical needs: getting information about the cycling network and finding parking.
