Langenzenn: Monastery, Art and ZennOase
Accommodation in Langenzenn
Langenzenn brings together a former Augustinian canonry, sites of art and history, theatre culture and activities along the Zenn. Cycling routes and the Burgenstraße add scenic and regional perspectives. When planning your visit, these different highlights can help you focus on culture, exercise or time by the water.
Monastery, Church and Art History
The former Augustinian canonry in Langenzenn was founded in 1409 by the Nuremberg burgraves Johann III and Friedrich VI and rebuilt by 1468. One striking feature of the complex is the cloister, considered the best-preserved in Middle Franconia. Some of its ribbed vaults have carved bosses. In the south wing, a net vault spans three and a half bays—an architectural feature in its own right within the cloister.
The church’s artworks also tell different stories. Veit Stoß created the Annunciation relief for Langenzenn Monastery Church in 1513; it is now housed in the church’s former sacrament house. In the Evangelical Town Church, the choir windows, made towards the end of the 19th century, depict scenes from the life of Christ in vivid colours. The two sites therefore offer different highlights: a Renaissance work in one, and a later depiction in glass in the other.
Museum and Guided Tours
The local history museum preserves Romanesque sandstone masonry in its foundations, which suggests it may be the oldest building in the town. Its subjects also include the geology of the Zenn and Farrnbach valleys, including uranium ore from Dillenberg. The lower floor of the Fronveste houses an old town pharmacy dating from 1557. The upper floor presents the town’s history.
Guided tours are available for local residents, newcomers and visitors. Stops and topics include the market square, monastery, church, Lindenturm, local history museum and Fronveste. As individual tour dates may change, check them in advance if a particular tour is important to your stay. The Langenzenn Local History Association opens its museums to groups outside regular hours by prior arrangement; contact the association directly to arrange a visit.
Theatre and Events
The Klosterhofspiele Langenzenn was founded in 1981 and takes place annually. It offers amateur theatre under professional direction, with productions that vary from year to year. The historic buildings of the former monastery also provide a setting for concerts and theatrical performances. If you would like to plan your stay around a performance, check the relevant dates and current programme in advance.
ZennOase: Exercise, Relaxation and Green Space
ZennOase is located right beside the Zenn and extends for about 200 metres, with an exercise trail, a quiet zone and a beer garden. The site also includes an adventure playground and a playground for young children, a maze, a water play area and a bouldering rock. Its different areas bring together exercise, play and a more peaceful place to spend time, without any one activity defining the character of ZennOase.
ZennOase also includes public plantings of local fruit, vegetables and herbs. Visitors are welcome to harvest the edible plants. This adds a practical opportunity to engage with the plants alongside the other leisure activities: visitors can not only look at the plantings, but also make use of the expressly permitted harvest.
Cycling Routes and the Burgenstraße
The Langenzenn Siebener Cycle Route passes through a cultural landscape, crosses the Zenn in several places and runs alongside quiet streams and biotopes, lush meadows, hedges, groups of trees and forests. The ErlebnisRadweg Hohenzollern offers a different focus: it passes through Langenzenn’s old town and by the monastery. At the monastery entrance, objects can be brought to life using an app; check whether the app is available before your visit. The Siebener route foregrounds the landscape along the way, while the Hohenzollern Cycle Route connects the old town with the monastery.
The Burgenstraße also offers a broader regional perspective: Langenzenn lies on this historic holiday route, which runs from Mannheim to Bayreuth and connects around 60 castles and palaces. A stay in Langenzenn therefore offers a choice of both local cultural sites and a wider historical route.
