Geisenfeld offers several distinct points of interest to consider when choosing where to stay: a rare heathland landscape with signposted hiking trails north of the town, an art trail in the town and evidence of different periods in its churches. There is also a museum with a range of collection areas and a weekly market starting in mid-May. If you are looking for a hotel in Geisenfeld, you can first consider whether nature, art, religious history or local produce is especially important to your stay.

Nature and trails north of the town

The “Nöttinger Viehweide - Badertaferl” nature reserve, covering just under 150 hectares, lies north of Geisenfeld. This heathland landscape is rare in the Danube lowlands, and signposted hiking trails lead through the area. It offers a distinct focus alongside the town’s art and cultural attractions. Plan your visit to the natural area accordingly and follow the nature reserve’s rules.

Art trail and sensory garden

The art trail runs through the town centre and the Ilm floodplains, passing modern outdoor artworks: the Green Man, the Stork Monument and the statue of St. John of Nepomuk, as well as the Walk-In Tree. The trail ends in the sensory garden. Art in the open air is the focus here, with a specific destination for your walk.

In the sensory garden, barefoot paths cross wooden planks, pebbles and sand. There are also fragrant herb beds with lavender, rosemary and mint. The different surfaces and herbs offer a contrast to the artworks along the trail: in the garden, the focus is on sensory impressions created by textures and scents.

Church history and Romanesque architecture

The parish church of the Assumption of Mary is linked to the history of the Benedictine abbey for nuns founded in 1030. Count Eberhard II and his wife Adelheides endowed the church; for centuries, it served as the abbey’s church. Late Gothic frescoes were painted in the choir in 1516. Some of the paintings were plastered over in 1602 and rediscovered in 1971. The uncovered frescoes are considered an art-historical rarity.

The northern aisle contains the Anna Chapel, with the late Gothic devotional image of St. Anne with the Virgin Mary and the Christ Child. The image is still venerated today in a small local pilgrimage. The same church thus brings together the former abbey’s history, fresco art and an ongoing local pilgrimage as distinct cultural themes.

In Ainau, the well-preserved Romanesque portal of the parish church of St. Ulrich draws attention to another period in architectural history. It is one of the most significant sights in the district and is highly valued by art experts. Alongside the frescoes in the Church of the Assumption of Mary, the portal offers a distinct focus on architectural history.

Collection and seasonal market

The collection of the Hallertau Hop and Local History Museum is displayed in a reduced form; visits are possible by appointment. The collection includes historic hop-growing tools, a shoemaker’s workshop, a general store and a forge. It also features a palaeontological section, archaeological finds and regional traditional costumes. Its themes therefore range from hop growing and crafts to natural history, archaeology and regional clothing. Arrange your museum visit in advance.

The weekly market adds a seasonal focus: a market featuring regional products and direct-sales producers takes place in Geisenfeld from mid-May. If the market is important to your travel plans, check in advance whether the market days coincide with your stay. This lets you consider nature trails, art, church and museum history, and the seasonal market as distinct factors when choosing where to stay.
