Oberostendorf: Inn History and Church Architecture
Accommodation in Oberostendorf
Oberostendorf combines historical details at the Unterer Wirt with the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary and the local heritage room in Gutenberg. If you are looking for hotels in Oberostendorf, these different perspectives on the town’s history can provide a helpful starting point for planning your trip. You can also explore the wider Ostallgäu travel destination through its own landscapes and activities.
Local history at the Unterer Wirt and in Gutenberg
At the Unterer Wirt, the inn sign and the wooden ceiling in the dining room have been preserved unchanged; both date from the second half of the 18th century. A depiction of Jesus and the Samaritan woman, with the words “Give me a drink,” adorns the south-facing exterior wall. The old wall inscription “Praise be to Jesus Christ” is on the east side. Both details express the spiritual connection between the inn and the parish church.
The original building of the Parish Church of the Assumption of Mary dates from the second half of the 15th century. By comparison, the sign and wooden ceiling at the Unterer Wirt date from the second half of the 18th century. In the town’s history, the church building and the inn’s furnishings thus represent two different periods.
In Gutenberg, a district of Oberostendorf, many old local objects have found a home in the local heritage room. These include a valuable, complete shoemaker’s workshop from an earlier era. Visits are by appointment only. The workshop adds a craft perspective to the town’s architectural and religious details.
Regional perspectives in the Ostallgäu
In the wider Ostallgäu travel destination, the mountains in the southwest of the district belong to the Vilser Gebirge range, while those in the southeast are part of the Ammergebirge range. At 2,082 metres, the Hochplatte is the highest mountain in the Ostallgäu. These details provide an overview of the region’s varied landscapes.
The UNESCO World Heritage Site is also part of the Ostallgäu’s regional cultural history: since 12 July 2025, Neuschwanstein Castle has been included alongside Linderhof Palace, the Königshaus am Schachen and Herrenchiemsee Palace. Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau, the two royal castles, can only be visited as part of a guided tour.
The Ostallgäu offers different options for orienting yourself on hikes and bike tours. The 32 local hiking routes showcase special treasures in nature and in the towns. The regional routes of the Ostallgäu Cycling Travel Region extend across the entire Ostallgäu; they are 25 to 76 kilometres long, consistently signposted and each dedicated to its own theme. The hiking routes focus on nature and local themes, while the cycling routes also offer guidance through their length and signage.
The landscape and activities also come together at Lake Forggensee: at more than 15 km², it is Bavaria’s fifth-largest lake and Germany’s largest reservoir. The Forggensee Cycle Route runs around the lake, and Forggensee boat trips operate regularly during the summer season. If you are planning a boat trip, check the seasonal timetable in advance.
One seasonal winter attraction in the Ostallgäu is the Alpspitzbahn Nesselwang. It provides access to the ski run around the 1,575-metre-high Alpspitz. The ski area offers family-friendly slopes and a children’s ski area; operating conditions may vary by season.
