Burggen: Traditions, Church Art and Trails
Accommodation in Burggen
Burggen combines living traditions with church art and trails for hiking and cycling. When planning your stay, you can focus on different things: an annual event, historic buildings or outdoor activities. The following topics will help you plan your time in Burggen and the surrounding area.
Traditions and Local History
The Eligius Ride takes place every year on the first Sunday of Advent. After the horses are blessed at the parish church, the procession passes through the village and by St. Eligius Chapel. This tradition gives you a special reason to visit during Advent. As the details of the event may vary, check the event information before your trip.
The Rosstag in Burggen follows a different rhythm: every three years, the region’s preserved rural cultural heritage is brought back to life. The two traditions therefore differ both in how often they take place and in their character. If you want to experience one of these events in particular, plan your trip around its date.
The listed historic buildings on St.-Anna-Straße also tell the story of Burggen. They were laid out according to a plan after the devastating major fire of 1795. The farmhouses built at that time are consistently oriented with their gables facing east. Burggen also lies on the historic Roman road Via Claudia Augusta, which once served long-distance trade from Augsburg to Verona and Venice. This trade route offers another perspective on the town’s history.
Churches and Art
In Burggen’s parish church of St. Stephen, some of the figures on the high altar and the two side altars were created by Anton Sturm of Füssen. The attribution thus covers figures on several altars and connects the church with a specific sculptor.
The parish church of St. Oswald stands in the district of Tannenberg. It was rebuilt from the ground up in 1827 after an older church was demolished because it had fallen into disrepair. The church also contains ceiling paintings by Nikolaus Augner, dating from 1825: the choir depicts the Last Supper, while the nave shows Saint Oswald as an intercessor. The building’s history and the subjects of its paintings each give the church a distinctive cultural character.
Hiking and Cycling Tours
Burggen has numerous well-marked, easy-to-walk circular hiking trails that are also suitable for cycling. Cyclists will also find plenty to enjoy: the region offers varied cycling tours, from leisurely outings to sporting challenges. The circular hiking trails in Burggen and the cycling tours across the wider region are distinct options to consider when planning your trip.
Near Burggen, the LechErlebnisWeg trail follows the Lech through the countryside. The Litzauer Schleife nature reserve and the Lech’s original course are also nearby. When planning, you can therefore choose between trails in the village, a route along the river and other features of the surrounding landscape.
