Beratzhausen: Hiking Trails, History and Landscape
Accommodation in Beratzhausen
Beratzhausen combines several named themed hiking trails with a historic Stations of the Cross and leisure activities within the municipality. This offers different ways to shape your stay: the history of the trails, regional themes and outdoor activities in the landscape.
Themed hiking trails with different focal points
The Art Trail, Mill Trail, Biblical Fruit Trail and Franz Xaver Staudigl Trail begin at Johann-Ehrl-Platz. Beratzhausen’s themed hiking trails are signposted; information boards along the trails include, among other things, poems and descriptions of individual stops. A central board at Johann-Ehrl-Platz provides advance information about places to stop along the themed trails, trail lengths and other useful details. This lets you take the listed distances and the different themes into account when planning. The Franz Xaver Staudigl Trail is named after a former mayor and local poet.
The Mill Trail leads from Beratzhausen toward Laaber, passing five mills along the way. Its themed information boards feature short texts by Erich Niebler about special attractions from the history of the Laber Valley. The mills provide a recurring theme along the route, while the texts offer a broader perspective on the valley’s history. This gives the trail a different focus from the Art and Fruit Trails, which also begin at Johann-Ehrl-Platz.
The Fruit Discovery Trail runs from Hemau through Beratzhausen to Kallmünz. There are also six shorter circular walking routes that start at large information boards and share stories and facts about old cultivated plants. This provides two different types of route: a long-distance trail through several towns and shorter circular routes with their own theme. If you are particularly interested in traditional cultivated plants, the information boards offer an introduction to the circular walks.
Stations of the Cross, landscape and leisure activities in the municipality
The Stations of the Cross leading to the Maria-Hilf pilgrimage church were built in 1875/76. A description dated March 25, 2026, portrays the original route as a path through the forest that serves joggers and hikers as a sporting route, as well as a place for prayer and meditation. It thus combines physical activity with religious and contemplative use. This focus distinguishes it from the themed hiking trails, which guide visitors with boards and information on specific subjects.
Within the municipality of Beratzhausen, the outdoor swimming pool lies southeast of the main town, between the R 11 and St 2394, amid a rocky landscape. The 2021 municipal landscape plan also notes the pedestrian connection to the skate park: a pedestrian tunnel under the R 11 provides access to the skate park below the pool. These places combine landscape and leisure, but remain distinct destinations with their own locations and functions.
The topography also shapes the leisure opportunities: sledding is possible on many slopes throughout the municipality. The 2021 landscape plan places a small local ski lift with floodlights at Schlossberg near Haderlsdorf. If you plan to use the lift, check its current operating status in advance. This helps distinguish enduring information about the terrain from the question of whether a specific visit is possible.
Another cultural perspective in the wider Regensburg destination
In the wider Regensburg destination, the Walhalla in Donaustauf offers a distinctive cultural and historical focus. Since 1842, this neoclassical memorial and hall of fame on the Danube has honored notable Germans and figures associated with German history with marble busts and commemorative plaques. The exterior features a Doric design with 52 columns. Here, architecture and commemorative culture take center stage, while the trails in Beratzhausen focus more on hiking, landscape and regional history.
