Accommodation in Regenstauf
If you are looking for a hotel in Regenstauf, the themes of your stay can help you find your bearings. Schlossberg and its castle history, nature and environmental education, and a seasonal trip on the Zille Marienthal offer different perspectives on Regenstauf. These places and activities give you concrete starting points for shaping your trip around history, wildlife or your interests in excursions.
History and nature at Schlossberg
A castle on Schlossberg in Regenstauf was finally destroyed during the War of the Succession of Landshut in 1504 and was never rebuilt. An information centre on Schlossberg focuses on the area's nature and history. The Schlossberg grounds were redesigned with nature in mind as part of a LEADER project and offer a varied attraction for all ages in the heart of Regenstauf. Two knight-themed playgrounds are also part of the facilities. This brings together the historical perspective and a modern attraction within the same theme.
Parts of Schlossberg are designated nature and bird conservation areas. They provide habitats for numerous, sometimes rare, songbirds as well as birds of prey, owls, woodpeckers and small mammals. This adds a view of the area's wildlife to its historical story. The observation tower on Schlossberg offers views of the surrounding area; there is also a café. Check whether the café is currently open before your visit.
Bird station and seasonal activities
The Regenstauf Bird and Environmental Station is located directly on the river in the Regental floodplain and offers a variety of ways to explore nature. It is a rehabilitation station for native wild birds and an environmental education centre for all age groups. Guided tours focus on eagle owls, peregrine falcons, white storks and other birds cared for there. The station also offers events and guided tours for adults. The “Microcosm of Nature” activity uses microscopes to reveal details of the natural world. Children's birthday parties can also be held at the Bird and Environmental Station.
The activities have different focuses: guided tours feature the named bird species and other birds cared for there, while “Microcosm of Nature” turns the focus to nature under the microscope. You can choose the topic that interests you most, without treating the different forms of environmental education as if they were the same.
Another seasonal activity is the Zille Marienthal. It operates from May to the end of September. Check the dates for the relevant season before travelling. The activities also differ in their timing: the Zille is limited to its operating season, while the Bird and Environmental Station's activities range from guided tours to environmental education.
In the wider Regensburg travel destination
The wider Regensburg travel destination also includes the Walhalla in Donaustauf, one of Germany's major Neoclassical buildings. Its exterior is Doric and features 52 columns. Since 1842, this memorial and hall of honour has commemorated notable Germans and people associated with German history with marble busts and plaques. Its commemorative purpose differs from the castle history of Regenstauf's Schlossberg: there, the focus is on the destruction of 1504, while the Walhalla is dedicated to honouring individuals.
Another distinct way to experience the Walhalla within the wider Regensburg travel destination is by taking a boat along the Danube. Passenger boats operated by Klinger and Wurm & Noé run from the Stone Bridge in Regensburg to the foot of the Walhalla from Easter to October. Check the sailing dates for your desired travel period in advance.
