Heustreu: Circular Hiking Trail and Historic Churches
Accommodation in Heustreu
The Heustreu Panorama Trail and the local churches and chapels offer different ways to explore Heustreu during a stay. The circular hiking trail has a longer and a shorter option. The historic buildings complement the hiking options with their own historical perspective.
Getting There and Planning Your Hike
Bus route 8153, also known as the Streutalbus, connects Heustreu with Bad Neustadt and Mellrichstadt. If you plan to use this service, check the current timetable details with the district before travelling.
The Heustreu Panorama Trail is a circular hiking trail with a longer and a shorter option. The circular route describes its shape; the options let you choose according to the planned length of your hike. This allows you to make the trail a focus in its own right and consider the churches and chapels as a separate cultural and historical highlight.
Churches, Chapels and Local History
Near the Streu, two round towers with conical roofs remain from the former Dreikönigskirche. In 1617, the tower of the former church was raised to four storeys and given a new spire; it is known as the “Echter Tower.” The coat of arms of Julius Echter is above the right-hand of the church’s two entrances on its east side. The towers, the changes to the church tower and the coat of arms offer several architectural and historical details in a single building.
St. Michael’s Church has a uniform interior dating from around 1690. It includes a high altar with a two-column structure, side altars and a pulpit. St. Vitus Chapel was built at the beginning of the 17th century. St. Anne’s Chapel is a wayside chapel from the second half of the 19th century. The wayside chapel is already marked on the Bavarian original survey map of 1849.
The area’s former land use is also part of its history: in past centuries, wine was grown on suitable plots in Heustreu, including on the Hohenberg. Winegrowing in the town ended after 1885. This broadens the view of Heustreu from historic buildings to a former use of the landscape.
Rhön-Grabfeld as the Wider Destination
The wider travel destination of Rhön-Grabfeld lies within the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps. The Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone of the biosphere reserve. A boardwalk takes visitors through parts of the moor, and information boards explain the route. An observation tower offers views of the Black Moor.
At Gangolfsberg, the nature forest reserve forms part of the core zone of the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. The basalt prism wall there was formed between 30 and 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön and can be explored along the Gangolfsberg nature trail. The trail is about 2.5 kilometres long; sturdy footwear is required. Guided tours for groups are available on request. The stated length, footwear requirement and request condition provide practical guidance for planning this regional nature excursion.
The fortified church in Ostheim vor der Rhön is also part of the wider travel destination of Rhön-Grabfeld. It was declared a monument of national significance in 2003 and is Germany’s largest and one of its best-preserved fortified churches. The church-fortress museum in Ostheim presents a dozen more fortified churches in the region, including those in Nordheim, Oberstreu and Kaltensundheim.
The Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen offers another cultural perspective. Using faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads, it presents 350 years of everyday rural history in Lower Franconia and the Rhön. The 12-hectare museum grounds contain around 30 historic buildings, including farmsteads, craft buildings and a village school. Hands-on activities about crafts and traditions include demonstrations, practical courses and events. Thus, Rhön-Grabfeld highlights everyday history and historic buildings alongside its fortified churches.
