If you are looking for a hotel in Wollbach, the Wollbach village trail can be a specific point of reference when choosing where to stay. The route is 3.5 kilometres long and starts at the village square by the town hall. The restored Bietbrunnen fountain is located along the final stretch. The circular walk thus combines a clearly identified starting point with a distinctive local landmark.

There is a boules court at the lower playground, which was available for play in 2022. If you would like to include it in your plans, check its current condition before visiting. The village trail and boules court therefore offer two different points of reference for planning your time in Wollbach: a route with a stated length and a court whose availability for play was recorded for 2022.

Nature in the wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination

Rhön-Grabfeld district is located in the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The Lange Rhön is Bavaria’s largest nature reserve outside the Alps; the Black Moor is also part of the biosphere reserve and is strictly protected as a core zone. A wooden boardwalk leads through parts of the moor, and information panels explain the route. From an observation tower, visitors can look out over the Black Moor. The boardwalk, panels and viewpoint thus offer different ways to experience this protected landscape.

At Gangolfsberg, the nature reserve is part of the core zone of the Rhön UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. The basalt column wall there formed 30 to 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön and can be explored along the Gangolfsberg nature trail. The trail is about 2.5 kilometres long; sturdy footwear is required. Guided tours for groups are available on request. The premium hiking trail “DER HOCHRHÖNER” also offers further hiking opportunities in Rhön-Grabfeld district.

Culture and history in Rhön-Grabfeld

In Ostheim vor der Rhön, the fortified church was declared a monument of national importance in 2003. It is Germany’s largest and one of its best-preserved fortified churches. The fortified church museum there presents a dozen more fortified churches from the region, including those in Nordheim, Oberstreu and Kaltensundheim. This places the individual complex in a broader regional context.

The Franconian Open-Air Museum Fladungen presents 350 years of rural everyday life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön through faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads. The 12-hectare museum grounds are home to around 30 historic buildings, including farmsteads, craft buildings and a village school. Hands-on activities focused on crafts and traditions include demonstrations, practical courses and events. The Rhön-Zügle museum railway travels through the Streutal valley with steam and diesel locomotives.

The region’s museums and monasteries offer further cultural highlights. Wechterswinkel Monastery houses a district cultural centre for visual art, music, literature and lifestyle. The gallery on the ground floor displays contemporary art, with a focus on sculpture. A bus stop is just a few steps from the monastery. The district gallery in the Old Hospital in Mellrichstadt displays the Rhön-Grabfeld district collection: paintings and sculptures from the Baroque period to the present day, all with a regional connection.

The Kreuzberg also brings together nature and culture: at 928 metres, it is the highest mountain in Rhön-Grabfeld district. A Franciscan monastery with its own brewery has stood there since 1644. With its pilgrimage church, the monastery is a spiritual centre in Lower Franconia.
