Mellrichstadt combines a historic old town with opportunities to explore history, get active and enjoy nature. Walkable town walls and lovingly restored buildings invite you to discover the town. Mellrichstadt is also located in the Rhön Nature Park and Biosphere Reserve; gentle hills, fields and meadows shape its surroundings. You can tailor your stay to your interests: local history, trails through the landscape or leisure activities in town.

Old Town, Architectural History and Remembrance

Explore the historic architecture of the old town, with its walkable town walls and restored buildings. Wolzogen Castle in Mühlfeld was built in 1715. The border installation at Schanz near Eußenhausen offers a different perspective on history: together with the sculpture park, it includes a small collection of former border security installations that recalls the division of Germany.

The Salzhaus Mellrichstadt Local History Museum combines history with educational activities. School groups and other visitors can operate historical equipment themselves. Examples include a “lesson with the village schoolmaster” and the demonstration “From Flax to Linen.” At Doku-Z Mellrichstadt, the Hainberg Barracks Documentation Center documents a Cold War border garrison. The district gallery in the Old Hospital in Mellrichstadt displays the Rhön-Grabfeld district collection: paintings and sculptures from the Baroque period to the present, all with a regional connection.

Hiking Trails, Cycling Routes and Nature

There are several signposted circular hiking trails around Mellrichstadt, including the Kolping Trail and the Sculpture Trail. Several long-distance cycle routes pass through the town: Haßfurt–Meiningen, Main-Werra, From the Main to the Rhön, Streutal Cycle Route, Rhön-Sinn and the Iron Curtain Trail (EV 13). The designated circular trails and named long-distance cycle routes offer different ways to explore the area. As detailed route conditions can change, check the latest route information before setting out on a cycling tour.

Mellrichstadt Sports Pool has an indoor pool, a wave pool and a slide. The district of Frickenhausen is also home to a legendary natural lake. There is a clear limit on visits to Roßrieth Moated Castle: as it is privately owned, the interior is not open to visitors.

More Things to Explore in the Rhön-Grabfeld Destination

The wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination brings together more cultural and nature-related attractions. The Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen brings 350 years of rural daily life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön to life through faithfully reconstructed houses and farmsteads. Its 12-hectare site contains around 30 historic buildings, including farmsteads, craft buildings and a village school. Hands-on activities focusing on crafts and traditions include demonstrations, practical courses and events. The Rhön-Zügle museum railway travels through the Streu Valley with steam and diesel locomotives.

The fortified church in Ostheim vor der Rhön is another notable cultural site in Rhön-Grabfeld. It was declared a monument of national importance in 2003 and is Germany’s largest and particularly well-preserved fortified church. The Fortified Churches Museum in Ostheim presents a dozen other fortified churches from the region, including those in Nordheim, Oberstreu and Kaltensundheim.

Rhön-Grabfeld also offers other destinations for nature lovers: the Black Moor is strictly protected as a core zone within the UNESCO Rhön Biosphere Reserve. A wooden boardwalk runs through parts of the moor, information panels explain the route, and an observation tower offers views of the Black Moor. The basalt prism wall on Gangolfsberg formed 30 to 10 million years ago during volcanic activity in the Rhön; explore it along the Gangolfsberg nature trail. The trail is about 2.5 kilometers long, and sturdy footwear is required. Group tours are available on request.
