Oberelsbach combines hiking trails with nature and cultural attractions that can help you organise your own travel plans. If you are looking for hotels in Oberelsbach, trail lengths and the character of the excursion destinations can be a good starting point: options include both an easy circular trail suitable for pushchairs and longer hiking routes. There is also the Rhön masked carnival, the biosphere centre and insights into local crafts.

Choose hiking trails by length and character

The moderately challenging circular trail “Rhön Circular Trail 1 – Five Districts” is 15.9 kilometres long and connects all five districts of the market town of Oberelsbach. A shorter option is the easy, family-friendly “Rhön Circular Trail 9 – Butterfly Nature Trail,” which is 4.4 kilometres long. It is suitable for pushchairs; information boards along the trail explain the life cycle of native butterfly species. This makes it possible to compare two circular trails of different lengths and difficulty levels without assuming a walking time.

The certified premium extra trail “Hochrhöntour” is around 15 kilometres long. It passes the Thüringer Hütte, the Basaltsee and the Schwabenhimmel, winding through meadows and forests. For a cycling trip, the Rhön Cycle Route is another option: the 180-kilometre route runs from Bad Salzungen in Thuringia to Hammelburg in Bavaria and crosses Oberelsbach roughly halfway along. Hiking and cycling thus offer different perspectives on the region.

Nature and the night sky

The market town of Oberelsbach includes five nature reserves. Protecting the night is also a local priority: all street lighting in Oberelsbach is designed with this in mind. The International Dark Sky Park Rhön was recognised in 2014. These special features add nature and night-sky themes to the hiking trails, and can be taken into account when deciding on a stay.

Masked carnival, crafts and the biosphere centre

The market town of Oberelsbach hosts the Rhön masked carnival every two years. Men dressed in traditional costumes, known as Spanmänner and Fosenöchter, and other participants parade through the streets wearing traditional wooden masks; the public is invited to attend. If the event is important to your travel plans, check the date in advance. Through the “Schnitz I Stand I Ort I Rhön” initiative, you can watch woodcarvers at work in Oberelsbach.

The UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Rhön is the subject of a permanent exhibition at the Haus der Langen Rhön Biosphere Centre in Oberelsbach. There is also a rally for children: Elsbeth the Rhön sheep asks questions and encourages them to look closely. The exhibition and rally have different focuses: information about the biosphere reserve for general visitors, and a playful discovery activity for children.

More ideas for excursions and leisure activities

On the outskirts of Oberelsbach, there is a miniature golf course with a kiosk on Gangolfsstraße. It is very close to the Oberelsbach playground, the motorhome site and the Els stream. Before visiting, check whether the facility fits your plans.

In Unterelsbach, a district of the market town, certified orchard educator Carmen Schiefhauer offers age-appropriate orchard tours, activities, excursions and projects year-round. They are intended for school classes, children’s and youth groups, families, clubs and adults. Founded in 2007, Pax-Bräu brewery makes beers and brewing specialities in Oberelsbach.

In the wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination

The wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination also offers other nature and cultural attractions that you can explore independently of what is available in Oberelsbach. The Gangolfsberg nature trail is around 2.5 kilometres long; sturdy footwear is required. The basalt column wall on Gangolfsberg formed during volcanic activity in the Rhön between 30 and 10 million years ago and can be explored along the nature trail.

The cultural attractions in the wider Rhön-Grabfeld destination include the Franconian Open-Air Museum in Fladungen. Set on a 12-hectare site, it displays around 30 historic buildings, including farmhouses, craft workshops and a village school. Faithfully reconstructed houses and farms bring 350 years of rural everyday life in Lower Franconia and the Rhön to life. The Rhön-Zügle museum railway travels through the Streu Valley with steam and diesel locomotives.
