If you’re looking for a hotel in Roth, you can plan your trip around the things that interest you most: the lake and nature, archaeological history or cycling. The 210-hectare Rothsee lies between Roth, Hilpoltstein and Allersberg. You’ll find other attractions in various places throughout the district and in the surrounding region, both nearby and further afield.

Rothsee, nature and waterside activities

The “An der Kleinen Roth” nature trail follows the stream of the same name. It rises east of Allersberg and gives Rothsee its name. The trail is 2.3 kilometres long and has seven information stations. It combines a short route with insights into the stream and its connection to the lake.

The Rothsee Environmental Education Centre offers guided tours throughout the year, tailored to different ages and abilities, for school classes, kindergarten groups, people with disabilities and visitor groups. During school holidays and at weekends, there is an open programme for children and families, who can also explore the centre independently. If you’d like to plan a particular activity, check the operator’s latest schedule.

Close to the destination, Familygolf am Rothsee has 18 artificial-turf mini-golf holes, with no age restrictions. Also nearby, the Rothsee sailing school offers sailing lessons and sailboat rentals. Its listed address is in Hilpoltstein; check the operator’s information before visiting.

Archaeology, local history and crafts

Near Roth, Fundreich Thalmässing brings together three archaeological attractions: the Archaeological Museum on the market square, the Living History Village of Landersdorf and the Archaeological Hiking Trail. They focus on artefacts and archaeological sites from past eras. In the history village, three farmsteads show how people lived in the Neolithic period, Celtic times and the Early Middle Ages. The three circular routes of the Archaeological Hiking Trail can be combined.

In Roth, the Museum Schloss Ratibor presents a collection on the history of the castle and the town. Another chapter in the region’s craft history can be found near Eckersmühlen: regular blacksmith demonstrations take place at the former Schäff iron hammer. If you’re planning a visit, check the current schedule.

The limestone tufa terraces in Kaising also offer a distinctive glimpse into the district’s natural history. They form a sensitive ecosystem and should not be entered. The “RH hoch 2” cycling loop, meanwhile, follows the district boundaries and circles the entire Roth district for more than 200 kilometres.

Cycling routes and excursions in the region

For a different scale of cycling, try the Gredl cycle route in the wider region. This circular route is about 51 kilometres long, runs along the former railway line between Hilpoltstein and Greding, passes through varied landscapes and is easy to ride. By comparison, “RH hoch 2” circles the entire district and is more than 200 kilometres long: the two routes differ mainly in their length and course. Check local route conditions before setting off.

The Gredl-Express 636 runs from Hilpoltstein via Thalmässing and Greding to Kinding and back. Numerous attractions in Roth district lie along the route, including half-timbered villages, Baroque and Rococo buildings, and museums with archaeological finds. As the route of this leisure service may change seasonally, check that it is running before you travel.

Further afield in the region, the “MS Brombachsee” excursion boat operates on the 870-hectare Großer Brombachsee from spring to autumn. It is the largest trimaran on an inland body of water in Europe. There are also numerous walking and cycling routes around Brombachsee. Check the latest sailing times before taking a boat trip.

Events and Franconian cuisine

DATEV Challenge Roth is a recurring summer-season triathlon event in Roth district. If you’re planning your trip around it, check event dates and participation details separately. For Franconian cuisine, look for district restaurants that serve local products under the “original regional” seal. Participating businesses and listings may change, so refer to the latest information.
