Tann combines a hilly landscape with a local history of religion and craftsmanship. When planning your stay, you can consider local themes separately from the wider selection of experiences in the region.

Location and Landscape

Tann lies in southeastern Bavaria, in the southern part of the Rottal-Inn district, near the confluence of the Inn and Salzach rivers and close to the Austrian border near Braunau and Burghausen. This location places the town in its regional context; other attractions in the wider Rottal-Inn destination are a separate part of planning your trip.

The landscape around Tann is hilly and wooded, with ever-changing expansive views. It adds a scenic focus to the town’s history. Visitors choosing Tann for a stay can explore both cultural themes and the area’s distinctive landscape.

History and Architecture

The pilgrimage to the “Lord of Tann,” a cross venerated as miraculous, reached its peak at the end of the 17th century. “Tanner Tuch” (Tann cloth) became widely known thanks to the industriousness of Tann’s citizens. These two themes represent different aspects of the town’s history: religious devotion and a textile tradition associated with the work of its citizens.

The town’s architectural history also offers a tangible point of interest: the parish church of St. Peter and Paul in Tann was built in the Neoclassical style. Its design adds an architectural dimension to the town’s history. The Martinimarkt was established by Duke Georg in 1481 and is the oldest of the markets named in Tann.

Things to Do in Tann and the Surrounding Area

The outdoor swimming pool is one option for spending your free time in town; if you plan to visit, check the latest visitor information beforehand. There is a mini-golf course in Zeilarn, 3 km away. This gives you two different options: the outdoor swimming pool in Tann and mini-golf nearby.

More Options in the Wider Rottal-Inn Destination

The Rottal-Inn leisure region has an extensive, well-developed network of trails spanning several hundred kilometres for hikers and cyclists. The tour portal supports individual route planning with information on elevation profiles, trail conditions and GPX downloads. The Inn Cycle Path runs through the Lower Inn European Nature Reserve and offers a variety of opportunities to discover the flora and fauna of the Rottal-Inn leisure region.

For culture enthusiasts, the “Gothic Tours” showcase selected Gothic monuments to locals and tourists. Brochures, maps, the tour portal and the Gothic portal are available to help visitors explore them. The latter offers audio guides to Gothic buildings that can be accessed on site, as well as an online museum with information and learning resources. The Theater an der Rott is also part of the region’s cultural offerings: it is the only theatre in Germany owned by a district and stages premieres every year in drama, musicals, concerts, dance, operetta and opera. Individual productions change.

The Rottal Terme adds another regional attraction. It includes more than 30 thermal-water pools at temperatures of 26 to 40°C, 13 different saunas and steam baths, a 105-metre-long thermal stream, and health, prevention and wellness offerings. The figures may change during renovation work, and specific facilities may change over time. For 2026, the Rottaler Hoftour covers themes ranging from rural life and everyday work to animals, farming culture, traditional crafts, handicraft techniques and regional specialities.
