Discover Burglengenfeld: Old Town, Castle and Culture
Accommodation in Burglengenfeld
Burglengenfeld offers travelers several concrete starting points for planning a stay: the late-medieval Old Town, the castle grounds, cultural venues and outdoor excursions. If you’re looking for a hotel in Burglengenfeld, consider what you’d like to focus your time on. Architectural history, a museum, open-air art, recurring markets and routes with different destinations each offer their own highlights.
Old Town and castle: historic architectural features
Despite numerous alterations, the Old Town still reveals the character of a late-medieval settlement. Gable-fronted townhouses from the 18th century and narrow lanes contribute to this. In the early 16th century, a covered wall with a battlement walkway and rectangular, projecting towers was built around the market square. Restored sections can still be seen today in the south and west of the Old Town. The townscape thus reflects both the character of a late-medieval settlement and sections of wall dating from the early 16th century.
The corner tower on the southwestern town wall at the foot of Kreuzberg is a former watchtower of the late-medieval town fortifications. The castle grounds cover 2.38 hectares and are enclosed by an 800-meter-long curtain wall with an outer wall seven meters high. The keep and another observation and defensive tower, later known as the Powder Tower, adjoin the wall. Of the inner castle, essentially only the “large round tower” remains.
Museum, memorial sites and town history
Since 1987, the Upper Palatinate Folklore Museum has been housed in the former Great Chancellery. The stately administrative building dates from the 16th century and stands at the foot of the castle. A bronze statue has commemorated Dietrich Bonhoeffer since 2012 in Bonhoeffer Square, by the Protestant Christ Church.
The enclosed four-sided farmstead, which was also defensible, was first mentioned in a document in 817. Its features include a half-timbered gatehouse and a corner tower set at an angle. It is also known as the “Altmann’sches Schlösschen,” after a former owner. The Bierkeller sauna at the Bulmare wellness pool offers another connection to the town’s history: it recalls Burglengenfeld’s long brewing tradition.
Art and outdoor experiences
The Burglengenfeld Kunstwaldgarten is an open-air art exhibition open year-round. It is freely accessible around the clock at no charge. A child-friendly guided experience takes the clever Kasperl on a historical trail with children through Burglengenfeld’s old streets and lanes. If you’d like to include this tour in your plans, check the current program in advance.
Markets throughout the week and year
A farmers’ market and weekly market are held every Thursday in the market square. If your stay falls on a public holiday, check the market day in advance. The Advent market takes place every year on the first weekend of Advent and offers arts and crafts, culinary surprises and live music. Unlike the regular weekly market, it is tied to this particular weekend, so for specific travel plans it’s a good idea to check the event date for that year.
Hiking and mountain biking
A hiking trail leads from the Imperial and Ducal Castle in Burglengenfeld along the Naab to Kallmünz. Rocks and juniper bushes shape the landscape along the way. A mountain bike tour, by contrast, starts in the market square and crosses the Naab before climbing to Köblitzplatte and Malerwinkel. The descriptions differ both in the mode of travel and in the route and destinations mentioned. Check current route conditions before setting out.
