Schweinfurt: Nature, Cycling Routes and Culture
Accommodation in Schweinfurt
The Schweinfurt district offers a variety of themes for a stay: nature and recreation destinations, cycling and hiking trails, cultural sites, and wine-related experiences. The examples are located in different municipalities and villages; plan your excursions around the themes that interest you most.
Nature Destinations and Views
The Brönnhof was added to the National Natural Heritage list on January 13, 2016. The former military training area covers 746 hectares and lies partly within the boundaries of municipalities in the Schweinfurt district. It provides habitat for protected species such as the Bechstein’s bat and the great crested newt. Ellertshäuser See, a local recreation area, is in the north of the district. The two places offer different experiences: Brönnhof focuses on habitats for protected species, while the lake is known as a recreational area.
The Kreuz Luisenhöhe in Schwanfeld offers expansive views: from there, the 360-degree panorama takes in the Main River, the vineyards of Vogelsburg, Heiligenthal, the Steigerwald forest, and the Haßberge hills. These views give this vantage point a different focus from the nature and recreation destinations.
Cycling, Hiking and Finding Your Way
For cycling travelers, the network in the district is an important part of planning: the Schweinfurt district has a well-developed network of cycling routes spanning more than 800 kilometers. An extensive hiking trail network is also a key part of the district’s leisure offerings. The Schweinfurt 360° Tourist Information Office offers cycling and hiking maps as well as suggested routes; digital maps are also available on its website. The district is responsible for signage on the cycling routes and at the hiking trail junctions. This allows you to plan around your preferred activity and make use of suitable navigation aids.
Public transport connects the entire district with the Mainfranken region via main and secondary routes, school buses, city buses, rail services, routes operated by other transport authorities, and the callheinz mobility service. If no bus or train connection is available, callheinz takes passengers from a callheinz stop to a transfer point on the regular public transport network or directly to their destination. Timetables may change; before traveling, also check the mobility service’s availability and booking conditions.
Cultural Sites and History
In Sömmersdorf, the PassionsGalerie features unique photographs from the 1930s and illustrates the history of the Passion Play stage from 1933 to the present day. The PassionsWege trails around Sömmersdorf start at the PassionsGalerie. The Passion Plays take place every five years; check the dates of individual performances if you would like to plan your trip around them.
Another exhibition awaits you at the Franconian Wayside Shrine Center in Egenhausen. The modern permanent exhibition presents the cultural history of wayside shrines across around 90 square meters. Egenhausen is a village within the municipality of Werneck. In Euerbach, you can explore a historical walking trail. The village is also home to the boundary stone garden, described as unique in Germany.
Werneck and Wine Villages
Werneck Palace Park invites you to stroll through its English landscape gardens, exotic plants, and pond. Parts of Werneck Palace are open to visitors; accessible areas include the Hall of the Heavens and the Baroque palace church. Check the details of interior visits before your trip.
In Handthal, wine hikes lead through the vineyards to the “terroir-F-Punkt” viewpoint on Handthaler Stollberg, where there is a castle ruin. Dates and providers may vary, so it is advisable to check the latest tour information before your excursion. Groha Winery in Oberschwarzach offers wine tastings, wine experience tours, and wine cellar tours. Confirm the respective visitor offerings and booking conditions before your trip.
